I know this isn't the most popular genre of music :P but I thought I would mention it since I'm listening to some mad banjo skills right now :p Oh Yes...I really like the bluegrass band "Old and in the Way" It's awesome! Woohoo!

Sid. You are my hero for making this topic. Bluegrass is the best, it really is. I don't really listen to a lot of "pure" bluegrass, and I'm fairly new to the genre, but most of my favorite music has at least some bluegrass influence. I've never heard of Old and In The Way but I should check them out sometime ;)
Some of my favorite bluegrass-influenced artists:

Nickel Creek-- "newgrass"
Chris Thile-- mandolinist of Nickel Creek
Newcomers Home-- bluegrass mixed with some rock
Katie Herzig-- lead singer of NCH
The Blackthorn Project-- mandolinist and fiddler from NCH
Jennifer Knapp-- especially in her song "Diamond in the Rough"
Bethany Dillon-- in her first cd more than her second. especially in "Exodus"!

The mandolin is the most beautiful instrument ever created, I believe.

Yay! Another person who likes Bluegrass! Woohoo! We listen to a lot of Bluegrass at work, it's really cool! I've heard of Bethany Dillon, but I actually haven't listened to her much, I think I should check her out...
OOo! Yes Mandolins are so cool, my mom has one from when she was little it's so cool, I can't exactly play anything on it, but it's cool just to mess around on it!

I like Nickel Creek, but that's all I've really listened to. I'm kind of a folkie at heart, so I like that kind of music...

Sid, Bethany Dillon isn't really bluegrass, but there is some influence in a few of her songs.

Blue grass is cool! :) Me, my dad, my sister, and my brother play old songs/bluegrass when we preform. My dad playes the banjo, my sister playes the guitar, my brother playes the violyn, and I play guitar or Mandolyn.

I really don't get to listen to bluegrass as much as I would like because there are no places around that sell the cds.... but I do listen some on tv. Allison Krause and Union station are REALLY good! I like there stuff.

Yeah, honestly not real well though. I just do courds basicly. My picking still needs some work.

But if you wanted to play I would say ( naturaly get one if you don't have one) and either find somone who can give you lessons or get a "learn it yourself book"

There several places where you can get the books... can't think of them right off the top of my head. (seeing as how there is just hair up there)

Allison Krauss! My dad loves her music! I like her too, she has a nice voice. Hmm....Ooo...The Gourds, I really like them as well....They're good as well! :-D

Thanks Jax Nova! I actually do know someone who gives mandolin lessons. I took a few guitar lessons from her a couple years ago, and those were expensive, so I'm assuming her mandolin lessons will be as well.
About how much would it cost to buy a decent mandolin? I saw some at WalMart for $70, but I don't think they were very high quality :P

Oh yes, Alison Krauss is good :) I haven't heard a whole lot of her, but I like what I did hear.

Has anyone heard Nickel Creek's newest album?

I like bluegrass, but I go more for Celtic folk, like the Chieftains. But I have a whole bunch of friends who LOVE bluegrass. :)

I was so close to buying a mandolin at a music store for about $199. I'm not really versed as to mandolin prices, makers, quality, but it sounded pretty nice to me!

The Chieftans are awesome! My dad has this "The Best of the Chieftans" CD, which is really good. They make me want to dance a jig. Have you seen the old Treasure Island movie with Christian Bale and Charleton Heston? The Chieftans did the music for that.

Well the one I have now was only about $70 for it, a soft carying case, and a book. I got it from musiciansfriend.com

As far as quiality it is fairly good as far as I know. (I am by no means an expert) But sometimes I have to spend 20 or more minutes tuning it. The nature of the instrument is that you have to tune it several times. But mine is real bad on that. Most good quiality ones should only take a few minutes I would think.

Basicly the reason mine does that though is because the strings stick in the nut because the grooves are to small. You can take them to a place and have the groves filed so they are biger though. (or do it yourself if you know how) For starting out the tunning can get discouraging after a while, and you have to turn the tuning pegs VERY little at a time most of the time. (especialy compared to a guitar) But besides that I think it's fine.

Hmm... that is good to know. If I ever get one, I think I will spend more than $70, because I hate tuning with a firey passion. I just hate hate hate it! I know that with guitars there is a special way to string them so that they don't go out of tune so much... maybe you can do the same with a mandolin.
