I won`t say anything about the best, but if you ask my favourite then I would have to say...
Emppu Vuorinen of Nightwish

fair enough, question has been changed to "who is the best guitarist, or who is your favorite."

I don't think I have the ability to judge who the best guitarist is, however, someone who's pretty unique and extremely talented on the acoustic guitar is Trace Bundy... if you're any kind of guitar fan, you should check out his video clips (he's amazing to watch) http://tracebundy.com/music.html

there are so many but my favourites are:
Jimi Hendrix
Steve Morse
Phil Cambel
Alex Lifeson
Steve Vai
Jimmy Page
Pete Townsend
John Petrucci
Joe Satriani
Angus Young
Steve Howe
Eric Clapton
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Mark Nopfler
Brian May
The list goes on and on but out of those, and the person who I feel was the greatest on the guitar must be Jimi Hendrix. He was so inspirational and used so many now widely used techniques which he used with great skill, such as disortion, wah and feedback. Plus he was a total natural, never learnt any music.
Simply put, IMO, the greatest guitar legend ever.

I don't know enough guitarists to give a list.
But I really like Richie Blackmore (Deep Purple, Rainbow, Blackmore's Night)

At the moment my fave is probably Jeff Loomis of Nevermore. Very talented player.
Others that come to mind are, Luca Turilli, Herman Li, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Dweezil Zappa, Adrian Smith, Janick Gers, Alex Skolnick, Dimebag Darrell, Mike Amott...
Ach, brains switched off now. I'll have to make a better list when I'm a bit more..alert.
