Some of the "care package" our stewardess packed for me since I can't eat while flying. It included a HUGE coffee cup filled with mixed nuts, two cinnamon scones, some fresh fruit, mini pretzels and my favorite Pepperidge Farm cookie, a dark chocolate Milano. Yeah, it sounds like a lot but I haven't eaten since yesterday morning.

A four-cheese pizza (though the Gorgonzola does kind of overpower the rest, taste-wise).

We shared a Caesar salad and potato skins in downtown Kailua-Kona. The breeze was blowing off the ocean and we agreed that the Kona side of the island has a much different feel to it than the Hilo side. I much prefer the Kona side.

A spicy pizza with Calabrese salami (what the Yanks call peperoni, even thought peperoni is properly a vegetable - well, anyway, not meat of any sort!)

Gandolorin wrote: A spicy pizza with Calabrese salami (what the Yanks call peperoni, even thought peperoni is properly a vegetable - well, anyway, not meat of any sort!) According to Wikipedia, pepperoni (with two P's in the middle) is: "Pepperoni, (also known as pepperoni sausage), is an American variety of salami, usually made from cured pork and beef mixed together. Pepperoni is a cured dry sausage similar to the spicy salamis of southern Italy, such as salsiccia Napoletana piccante, a spicy dry sausage from Naples,[6] or the soppressata from Calabria." I've failed to locate "peperoni" as a vegetable. Might you be thinking of a "pepperoncino"? From Wikipedia: "Peperoncino (Italian pronunciation: [peperonˈtʃiːno]; plural peperoncini [peperonˈtʃiːni]; sometimes spelled pepperoncino and pepperoncini in English)[a] is the generic Italian name for hot chili peppers, specifically the cultivars of the species Capsicum annuum and Capsicum frutescens.[2] The sweet pepper is called peperone (plural peperoni) in Italian.[3]"

Well, what you may have overseen is that a bit lower in that Wiki article the following is stated: "The term "pepperoni" is a borrowing of peperoni, the plural of peperone, the Italian word for bell pepper. The first use of "pepperoni" to refer to a sausage dates to 1919."Tsk, tsk, tsk. Well, we've had (American) football, (ice) hockey ... you don't expect me to be surprised that US American usage of foreign terms leaves something to be desired? But then what can be expected from folks that still use such ancient, obsolete terms as inches, feet, yards, furlongs, miles, acres, pints / quarts / gallons (and for the latter, you and the Brits can't even agree on how much it is!) P.S.: chocolate chip cookies.

Back to your original quote: Gandolorin wrote: A spicy pizza with Calabrese salami (what the Yanks call peperoni, even thought peperoni is properly a vegetable - well, anyway, not meat of any sort!) What I should have said was we Americans ("Yanks" is a very much outdated term others use to call U.S. Americans in general. It's a degrading term the Southerners used to call the Northerners in the Civil War and some still do. I know no one who calls themselves that since those I know prefer the term Americans.), don't call it peperoni, with one P. We call it pepperoni with two P's and have done so for nearly 100 years (thank you for the date). That's the interesting thing about the English language in general, it borrows from other languages and incorporates it into English, the ever changing, living language. My engineers were notorious for turning nouns into verbs when needed. Hot chocolate and Life cereal.

Findë, see Rant Thread for non-munchies comment.
Sliced turkey meat with mushroom sauce and "Spätzle" (Wiki: "Spätzle dough typically consists of few ingredients, principally eggs, flour, and salt. The Swabian rule-of-thumb is to use one more egg than the number of persons who will eat the spätzle. Often, water is added to produce a thinner dough. The flour traditionally used for spätzle is a coarse type known as Dunstmehl, similar to US "first clear" or Czech hrubá type, known in the UK as semolina flour or pasta flour from durum wheat with a high yellow semolina content. This gives a chewier texture but can produce a dough too crumbly for scraping if no water is added, particularly when cutting short on eggs for dietary reasons. If fine ("all-purpose") flour and the full complement of eggs are used, all fat and moisture in the dough is derived from these, and water is rarely necessary.
