This week we twice, after having finished off our regular pot of coffee, brewed another half (a bit more) pot. A need to replenish some “base caffeine level” after our aborted attempt to “come clean” and “kick the caffeine habit?”

If you enjoy some particular food, or drink, you should eat and drink it in moderation. Life is much too short to go without the things that make it pleasurable.

But the smell of the coffee when we open the package has very definitely deteriorated towards the non-pleasurable end. Now my wife drinks it with milk, and I take milk and sugar. Perhaps if we were really hard-core straight coffee drinkers, we might have stayed “clean”.

I just dumped the Colombian Black Label dark roast in the koffer this morning. It was mixed with the Swiss Chocolate and tasted lovely. We'll see how it is on its own tomorrow.

Oddy enough I have not had coffee since last Saturday. Got really sick over the weekend and am just now feeling back up to par. Didn't even think of wanting coffee while I was sick for whatever reason. :/ *shrugs* Kind of odd for me.

Managed to end up with some grounds in my coffee this morning. It took me back to the days of drinking my dad's 'camp' coffee. It was, erm, different.

Lol, I always liked camp coffee... but that's just me. I prefer it without the grounds, but it's all good either way. Coffee is coffee!

When I think about it, I only once did camping in the sense of tenting, in southern Spain (just on the Atlantic side of the Straits of Gibraltar). A freshman trip in college and a later weekend at least ended up in a large college lodge (though sleeping was in sleeping bags). The campsite just west of Tarifa in Andalusia, where my buddy and I spent more than three weeks in 1981 had some amenities, a bar close up to the beach being the center of evening activities, and a small supermarket on the inland part of the campsite beyond a regional road being the main supplies source. We decided on instant coffee, dispensing with all of the hassle of filters-and-grounds …

This was tenting by the beach (my buddy had been there before) with the usual stuff one does on a beach holiday (many others there had caravan trailers instead of tents, especially the Dutch!), not hiking the Appalachian Trail kind of stuff! The roughing-it part was getting there with a late-1970s 40 HP Ford Fiesta, 5400 kilometers there and back again, and Spain’s highway system was still in its formative phase, being just a few years after the end of the Franco dictatorship. The coffee, a freeze-dried Nescafe, was good enough.

Camping to me means travelling up some remote logging road to a lake known for its fishing. Pitching a tent by the lake, and building a bonfire over which we can cook the fresh-caught fish. I seemed to always end up with a sharp pointy rock digging into my hip, despite checking the ground carefully before pitching the tent.

Not one for fishing - and yesterday and today, we also didn't drink coffee, instead we drank black tea.

I sure enjoyed that when I was younger. I would enjoy it now too... if I had the time to do it! We would even go find eatable mushrooms and such things to roast over our fire. They are wonderful roasted over an open flame!
