RT Shepherd & Son began manufacturing bagpipes in the 1984 in Scotland. They are known in many “bag piping circles” for manufacturing bagpipes with rich sound and quality craftsmanship. Even though they are slightly smaller than many other types of Highland Bagpipes; it still projects a strong sound. The average Shepherd Pipe has a synthetic Canmore bag. A Canmore bag requires no seasoning as most hide bagpipes require. When seasoning a Bagpipe the user must boil the special seasoning substance usually made of lye. After boiling it must be applied to the inside of the bag and steadily worked into the hide, the piper must then drain the bag and let it hang over night. The standard hide bag requires seasoning around ever 18 months. As demonstrated seasoning is a pain, while it is much easier to buy a Canmore bag and skip all the effort of seasoning. Another signature mark of the Shepherd Company is their reeds; recently the Shepherd company designed and began manufacturing a new type of synthetic drone reed. Even though they are easy to take care of, they are not easily adjusted or tuned as many other reeds.
