Ok, so I know several people, myself included, that can put on a (relatively) good English/British accent. (I say relatively because I've don't really know if I could pull an accent of in England or anything, as I've never been there) ANYWAY, I was wondering if it is easy for people in England(This sounds silly, but what do y'all call yourselves?  ) to put on an American accent.

^ we generally call ourselves english people or brits. personally, i'm pretty bad at accents, but i know a few people who are good at them and the stereotypical american accent seems to be one of the easiest for them. |

Ah... I see. I'm pretty good at accents, and with enough practice (ie hearing the accent alot) I can do lots of accents... |

Haha, I (an american) had three accents under my belt at one point in time... British, Southern, and Scottish, but I was in a long running play, and had to be a Southern maid, and it demolished my other accents. I'm just now getting my British accent back, but the Scottish is gone forever, I think. |

^ by british, do you mean 'properly spoken' english? 'british' and 'english' really shouldn't be used interchangeably. there are four countries in britain, of which england is only one (even if it is the biggest). using britain for england seems to dismiss wales, scotland and northern ireland, and robs england of any semblance of an individual national identity. at any rate, there are so many accents within britain that the term 'british accent' doesn't mean anything at all - england, scotland, wales and northern ireland each have their own received pronunciation (the accent most commonly mimicked) but then there are dozens of regional accents. i know it's the same in america, but in my defence i did refer to the 'stereotypical american accent' in my last post to acknowledge that the accent most english people pick up on isn't representative of the way americans speak. sorry for the rant - it's just something that really irritates me. |

I have a Michigander (michigoose?) accent. I can't speak for all Brits and people with other accents, but I have a Kiwi friend, and her attempts at an American accent are just a weakened version of her Kiwi one. |

I can't do accents very well when I'm not around someone who has them, but I pick up accents within a day or two when I'm in a new country, and afterwards it's fairly easy to use it again. However, having never stayed in England for a day or two, it's still difficult for me to do an English accent. I have an Aussie friend who is incredible with accents. He picks them up within minutes--introduce him to someone with a new (to him) accent, and he can mimic it perfectly around a minute later. I have never heard anyone who is as good with them as he is. |

I can fake the English one if totally concentrated  Otherwise mine reminds you of those stereotypical Slavic accents. Russian English YAY!

Lol... Yeah, BTW, EoI, I wasn't trying to be to brief, but I didn't want to go into to much detail.. Really, I don't know what you would classify my accent as... Its like america. People call it an 'american' accent, but really they could mean a New York accent, a southern accent, a redneck accent, a hispanic/american accent... The list goes on. Lol, even in Texas, a native can probably figure out weather another native is from north, south, east or west Texas by talking to him/her.
As for me, I'm actually pretty good at English accents... I have a tiny bit of a southern drawl naterally, but I can exagerate that... Alot... And I can do (rather poorly) A scottish accent.

Languages and accents have always come easy to me, whether in Swedish or English. There are hundreds of domestic dialects in Sweden and I can do at least 5 or 6 of them fluently. As far as English goes, I usually speak with a pretty general American accent but I can also do a Southern one. I can also do the 'Oxford' type proper English accent, a general Irish accent, a wee bit of a Scottish accent, and a fairly decent Australian and Kiwi accent! |

i apologise again for my rant - i just get very defensive of my englishness. like i said before, i'm rubbish at accents. i can do a very posh english accent and i can say random phrases in irish and dudley accents, but that's it. i don't even have a strong natural accent - i speak near-RP (received pronunciation - the neutral english accent) with a spattering of midlands and yorkshire dialect words and the occassional hint of a brummie (birmingham) accent. i'm often accused of sounding posh, but that's mainly because everyone else i know has a stronger accent than me, which makes it sound like i speak very properly. |

lol, its ok! And yeah.... I thought I had no accent until I met someone that really didn't have an accent.  I was dreadfully mistaken. I have a southern drawl, as almost all native Texans have... Though its not as severe as some...  (i.e. I pronounce things such as 'W' 'Dubya' or 'Yellow' 'Yella'.) I can get alot more southern, and typicly do when I'm watching a movie with people that have heavy southern accents. lol, I open my mouth to comment on something, and I'm thinking, 'Wait, that was me?! I didn't know I had that much of an accent!' lol... anyway, enough about me.
SO! Out of all of the interesting accents, what are y'all's favorite sounding, and which ones bug you the most? |

Well, I don't have much of an accent unless I have the occasional whim to lean towards theatricality. Then I will either take a Northern English accent, Scottish accent, or an accent that you get from BBC. |

 Yeah, I can do several different impressions, Jack, Obi-Wan, Will, Legolas.... Gollum... Anyway, Sometimes I randomly fall into an english (probably a north english) accent randomly. I don't know why, I just do. I have a bit of trouble quoting people from movies who are american, as everytime I quote a movie, I immdietly start using an accent. Its wierd.
