An old king with two sons was thinking one day on who he would pass the kingdom on to when he was gone. He knew he was growing old and soon it would be time. As either of his sons seemed to be a great candidate, he could not decide who would ascend the throne. So, he devised a contest. He brought both of his sons to him and gave them each one of his two fastest horses. Then, he told them to race to the nearest kingdom and that the last horse there wins. Obviously, the boys were confused, for how can you win a race where the last one there wins, unless one gives up? Looking for advice, they got on the horses and went to high priest, who was the wisest man in the kingdom, looking for advice. Upon leaving the priest, they jumped onto the horses and raced wildly to the nearest kingdom. What did the priest tell them? |

Hm... The priest told them that there was a wall surrounding the nearest kingdom, and the fastest and most direct way to get in was to climb the wall, but then you had to let in the your horse at the gate. You could ride the horse directly into the gate, but you yourself wouldn't have gotten into the kingdom faster. Therefore the last horse that arrived would be the winner's horse? I've never heard this one before so that's a wild, abstract guess. ![]() |

Just a shot in the dark here: The priest told them that they both lost, seeing as they both raced together, as fast a they could to the nearest kingdom. Is that anywhere close???? |

Wait.. the king said nothing about last prince or person... he said last horse. And he gave each son two horses... do these little facts have something to do with the answer? |

I was going to guess that the priest told them to ride to the town and then leave the horses at a stable nearby and then walk in, and therefor, if the other brother rides in, the other brother will be there first, but his horse will not. Does that work? ![]() |

No, he gave each son one of his two fastest horses. But I do think the fact that he said the last horse is important. ![]() |

Hm... than maybe... where the priest was, was the closest kingdom... and the priest told them who really won, and so, on the way back, the original kindome where the started was the closest kingdom again... |

Yeah, sorry if I was unclear, each son has one of the two horses. You are all on the right track though, the phrase, "the last horse there" IS important. keep trying! |

A wild stab in the dark but "the last horse there" is a name? And the priest told them which one rode the horse with that name? ![]() |

That's an interesting answer, but no. |

Okay, so I'm getting closer. Okay, question. Was the priest in the same kingdom as the king that made the contest? The riddle said the smartest man in the kingdom, but it didn't specify which kingdom... |

You are still thinking too hard. The boys are going from point A to point B where the last horse wins. So how do you win without one giving it up and going first. The wise man is in the same kingdom, everything is in the same kingdom to start with and the boys go to the other to win the race. good luck |

Wait... Is it that they left the king's two fastest horses at the priest's place, and took new ones to ride to the closest kingdom? |

oooh, you are getting close. That's the right idea, not correct, but close. |
