Think about those odd phrases that everyone says but don't actually make any sense. They must have originated from somewhere, but I think exactly how they came to be has been lost. Add on if you think of other unusual sayings. "Dead as a door nail." Never knew any live ones myself... "Raining cats and dogs." That could get kind of messy, don't you think? All those cats and dogs dropping from the sky not only would be weird but after they make impact with the ground..... it wouldn't be pretty. "Sleeping like a baby" Whoever came up with that one obviously never had children in the house.... "Happy as a clam." How could anyone posiibly know if clams are happy? Are there clamatologists (is that even a real word?) out there that study the mood swings of clams? "Cute as a button." how many 'buttons' are 'cute'... you get those nasty little metal ones... that if you wash them too many times... they rust... then there are the tackky plastic ones that the cat and kids try to eat... and lets not forget the ones that FALL OFF... Like comeon now... if they were so cute... don't you think they would 'hang around', a bit longer... "Healthy as a horse." What's up with that? Horses alot of the time are NOT very healthy. There's a whole list of things that could go wrong...! Why isn't it as healthy as a dog... or a cow for that matter. "Fit as a fiddle." I've never seen an overweight fiddle, but why would they even need to be fit? |

Well...most of them do make sense...they just have a logical counterpoint. Which you mentioned! I dont know if you've heard this one but "As stupid as a chalkboard" Chalkboards arent living, you couldnt be as stupid as one. Also, chalkboards may in fact be very smart seeing as they are filled with educational "A spells apple" type thing! |

I don't know if you've ever read "A Christmas Carol", but Dickens goes off on this long tangent discussing how he never knew how a doornail would signify death, and that it should in fact be a coffin nail if any type of hardware...i can't quote the whole thing cus it's been 3 years and it was 3 paragraphs of nonsensical ramblings, but you can tell the man was paid by the word... |

I think I know where 'Raining cats and dogs' came from, though. *digs up Encyclopedia of World Geography* 'Rain' consisting of animals, fish or other objects has been reported many times throught the centuries. The Roman historian Pliny reported a shower of frogs almost 2,000 years ago and in the fourth century, fish fell on a town in Greece for three days. During a storm in England in 1939, so many frogs fell that witnesses were afraid to walk around in case they squashed them. Showers like this, also known as 'skyfalls', are probably caused by tornadoes sucking up animals from ponds and rivers. Frogs are most often reported, but there have also been showers of snails, maggots, worms, pebbles and even sheep. 
Well, if sheep can fall from the sky, I don't see why cats or dogs couldn't!

Oh yay! I'm so glad you started a thread like this! I'm always questioning where on earth these silly expressions came from. ~Shieldmaiden~ wrote: "Sleeping like a baby"
Whoever came up with that one obviously never had children in the house.... I think that what that one means is when your a baby or a child you don't have all the worries of an adult and can sleep peacefully. I've never heard "Healthy as a horse" or "As stupid as a chalkboard" before The chalkboard one makes me laugh though - I'm so using it

I've thought of some more: "workin' like a dog" I don't know about yours, but my dog sits around and does nothing all day. "deaf as a doorknob" So the nails are dead and the knobs are deaf- are the key holes dumb? “cool as a cucumber†|

But Larry the Cucumber is cool! lol One I've heard before-"Whoever uses the phrase 'easy as taking candy from a baby' has never tried to take candy from a baby!" it's very true! Let me think..........*after a considerable pause* I can't think of anymore right now. I'll try to think of some and post them tomorrow! |

Yeah, Larry's the only cool one I've seen too. I thought of some more that I've wondered about! "Cute as a bug's ear" A bug's ear is so small that we can't even see it, and why a bug, they're not even that cute! lol Drat, I forgot the others I was thinking of! This always happens to me, I can't remember what I want to remember when I want to remember it! lol |
