So far this week (from Monday 22), we have only made our usual pot of coffee on Wednesday, as on the other three days we were driving around on errands, and when we arrived back home, it was past our usual coffee time.  _________________

Bought two brands of coffee today to test which of them might become the substitute of or previously regular brand, which has gone downhill in all aspects.

Bad news about the first alternative brand of coffee that we tested today: no improvement on our previous brand, maybe they are all from a bad harvest, or a batch that got botched in some manner between plantation and supermarket.

Personally, I like a medium roast coffee. The brand I use is pretty consistent, although every once in a while a batch comes through that's a bit over, or under, roasted.

While my wife stated that the smell of our previous regular brand (ground coffee, not whole beans) had taken a turn towards sour, I believe remembering that its previously powdery consistency had taken a turn towards being sticky, making dosage with the special spoons we have for it more difficult. The first alternative brand definitely smells sour compared to what even my insensitive nose remembers as the “coffee smell” of earlier times, and in stickiness it appears to be worse than even our previous regular brand. Well, we have the second alternative brand to test. Maybe we need to change over to whole beans and do our own grinding, something I remember doing with delight back with old-fashioned manual grinders in the 1960s when we were on visit from overseas to grandparents, uncles and aunts etc. in Germany.

Before the roasting process, there are the (supposedly) two bean sorts, the Arabica and the Robusta. Possibly shifting usages of (artificial) fertilizer, pesticides and herbicides. Changes in harvesting methods and all what follows before the coffee beans even get to the roasters.
And I definitely remember that the roasting processes for the US and the European markets differed. In Europe possibly those aimed at say the Italian, French, British and German markets, just to name the largest ones. As has been the case with much else, a trend towards homogenization driven by the psychopathic suits may have had effects here.
I have no idea whatsoever how the coffee industry is organized behind the nominal marketing labels. And the multinationals of the “food” industry are probably desperate to keep it that way (though desperation on their part can only be assumed if they have not managed to totally corrupt all consumer protection entities in all countries yet). Let the consumers choose?!? The total nightmare! Fool them with 25 nominally different brands that are just differently packaged versions of the uniform, cheap garbage in the background.
