And once again (after about 40 pots), we descaled our coffee machine. Evil~Shieldmaiden once confessed to being puzzled about the need to de-scale a coffee machine in this thread. Well, it very much has to do with the quality of the local water, how “hard” or “soft” it is in German parlance. Ours is very much on the “hard” side, with all things coming into contact with hot water building up nasty calcium deposits that degrade them. And the Würzburg area in Lower Franconia to the north-west of here must be descaling hell, as the substrate there consists massively of shell-heavy calcium deposist. :(

Our water isn't too bad here, and the machine has a charcoal filter that the water runs through before hitting the diffuser, but the machine has a timer and an irritating red led blinks when it determines the need for a de-scale. The coffee is less bitter afterward. Don't really notice the coffee getting bitter as it's gradual, just can tell afterward that it is less bitter.

We have excellent water here so I don't really have to descale my coffeemaker, just clean it. Our water is from a reservoir that catches the snow melt from Mt. Arrowsmith and the Qualicum River.

I finally tried out your coffee with cinnamon and cloves, Hanasian. It is wonderful! :-D

Yes, the Pacific Northwest (or I guess in Canada it would be the Pacific southwest?) does have lovely mountain catchment water!
And yes, there is nothing like that cinnamon/clove coffee!

Bought myself a new coffeemaker as the other one was umpteen years old, and the pot broke.

Bummer! Can you get a replacement from the manufacturer?

It's not worth the hassle. Besides the new coffeemaker is the same make and was only $22.

Ah yes, costs more to repair or replace than to buy new.

I have to say after a few days of the Panamanian coffee, I have a decided preference for the Kenyan Mocha. Must order more!

Well at least it was not a fancy one. I was.... er... juggling potatoes once... *clears throat* Anywhooo.... let's just, it inded badly for my coffee pot... that had JUST finished brewing a whole 12 cups of coffee. I wasn't sure which was worse... loosing the coffee pot or my 12 cups of coffee....I know you are not supposed to cry over spilt milk... but this is COFFEE we are talking about!! Lol

It was a fancier pot I bought used for like $40 but it ended up being ok because I never used any of the fancy pre-sets or time schedueled brewing. I just put coffee and water in and pushed the on button... lol

Our coffee machine has exactly one button: the on / off one. It shuts down automatically after the water has driped through the coffee powder, we only need the off function when descaling the machine, stopping the dripping after half of the descaling solution has run through to let it soak the heating coils for an hour.
