If you see a movie's cast list, what names pop up that either entice you to a movie or repulse you? And how influential are they in your choices?

For personally, the cast does matter but it really depends on the director, the screenwriter, and the role they're playing as well as the genre of the movie. Personally if the actor or actress is enjoying their roles, chances are I'll share in the fun. For the people that I like, it's not like I see every single one of their movies but I try my best. I'll go more in detail but right now here's the list of actors that immediately get my interest when I'm running through cast lists. I'll try to keep this list short but I make no promises.

1. Natalie Portman I hope no one was surprised by this. My favourite roles with her is when she plays morally devious characters like The Other Boleyn Girl or Closer but the other movies I've seen her in, I really enjoyed her presence. Not only is she incredibly beautiful but when she's given good material to work with, she can really turn in a phenomenal performance. She brings a certain passion that I feel is lacking in most movies these days.
Favourite role: Nina Sayer in Black Swan

2. Cillian Murphy What an amazing actor. I've seen him play an Irish revolutionary, an insane psychiatrist, a ruthless terrorist, a transvestite, a physicist, and a grieving son and in every performance, he really nails his role perfectly. What's great is that he plays every role differently. I mean, yes, you know that's Cillian Murphy because he's so unbelievably hot but he feels like a different person.
Favourite role: Dr Jonathan Crane in Batman Begins

3. Liam Neeson What else do I need to say? He's just awesome.
Favourite role: Ra's al Ghul in Batman Begins

4. Summer Glau Okay yeah, she does kind of play the same basic role of a introverted or socially awkward girl who has amazing skills, usually fighting. But who cares. She does it so freakin' well that I wouldn't mind an entire movie of her kicking ass and taking names.
Favourite role: River Tam in Firefly

5. Sean Bean Bless his heart he dies a lot in his roles but he just takes every role he's given and puts so much effort that you can't stop rooting for him.
Favourite role: Eddard Stark in Game of Thrones

6. Hugo Weaving Oh god, I love this guy. He kinda plays only one role but he just does it so well and it's just so amusing to watch him.
Favourite role: Agent Smith in The Matrix

7. Nathan Fillion Another guy that really gives it all in his roles...but just has so much fun with them.
Favourite role: Captain Malcolm Reynolds in Firefly

8. Christopher Eccleston Of Doctor Who fame, on his own he is incredibly good and he really has a sense of fun in his role
Favourite role: Duke of Norfolk in Elizabeth

Sorry, you guys, no commentaries for you. :(

Christoph Waltz - Favourite role: Colonel Hans Landa in Inglorious Basterds
Gary Oldman - Favourite role: Detective Stansfield in Leon
Edward Norton - Favourite role: The Narrator in Fight Club
Anthony Hopkins - Favourite role: Hannibal Lecter in Silence of the Lambs
Geoffrey Rush - Favourite role: Francis Walsingham in Elizabeth
Ralph Fiennes - Favourite role: Harry in In Bruges

Okay, for the actors that I cannot stand in movies.

1. Shia LaBeouf. My god, why does he still have an acting career. He cannot act outside of screaming "No, no, no, no!!" like a bloody girl. And the fact that he's going out of his way to say the movies he were in were bad. Yeah, ever figured the reason why they sucked was because you starred in it, you little prick?

2. Sam Worthington and Channing Tatum. I'm lumping these two idiots together. Tough macho guys that have no business acting. I've seen rocks more livelier than them.

3. All these modern comedy actors. Yeah I'm calling you all out. Rob Schneider, Zach Galifianakis, Kevin James, and all of your pillock friends. Your juvenile silly humour with feces and urine and getting drunk or high and goofing off like Mongoloid lobotomised children. It's not funny. It's not cute. It's stupid, it's annoying, it's aggravating, and it needs to stop now. Or help me god, I'll hunt you guys down and put a bullet between your eyes. And when I'm done with you, I'm hunting down the writers and hanging them from their gorram high rise condos. With barbed wire. With their tongues stuck up their rectums.

4. Megan Fox. Okay, it's not just her; it's actresses like her but she in particular stands out. Girls who cannot act but somehow still manage to land acting roles because they look pwetty. Folks, if you want to look at hot girls, there's pornography. It's on the Internet. Watch that instead. You don't have to waste time, money, or film on these people. Somewhere out there, there's a starving actress waiting tables with talent but she never gets cast because these fleshwastes are getting all the roles.

Lets see, I'll see anythin thats got Hugh Jackman in it, he's my favorite for too many reasons to list. I'll also watch almost anythin that Robert Downey Jr is in. The only actor that comes to mind that turns me off a movie is Will Farrel, I just dont find him all that funny. I'm sure there are others though, just cant think of them.

And I agree, Liam Neeson was freakin awesome in Batman! I've heard rumors that he is going to be back for Batman 3, then I've heard he's not, and now I've heard he is again. Have no idea whats going on there. And Nathon Fillion is just all around awesome, you can tell he gives it his all with his roles, but he still has fun with them. the only scifi space themed show I liked to watch, he did an awesome job as Captain 'Tightpants' Malcolm. And he does good in Castle too. love him in Castle.

Nathan Fillion (agree with what you guys said)
Gina Torres (I just like her)

There are a lot of science fiction tv actors I like.

I love Sean Bean, he is amazing in everything he is in. Also, Johhny Depp, he is amazing actor and his role are usually so psychodelic...
Monica Belucci. She is my favourite actress. Sam Neill. Ewan MacGregor. Christian Bale. Kristen Kreuk. Angelina Jolie. Isabella Rossellini. Helena Bonham Carter. Miranda Richardson.

As for the actors I really don't like: Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom. They always turn me off from the movies...
And I agree with Rob Schneider. Plus Jim Carrey.

Nicholas Cage is awful- his performances are nearly always the same and his acting is so hammy it's laughable. I think this video demonstrates my point

I also can't stand Adam Sandler- he's meant to be funny, but he just comes across as a massive idiot- I mean most comedy actos can be really annoying, but he is the worst of the worst.

& I don't get any of the love or appreciation that is shown for Jennifer Anniston- she always plays the same character: Rachel- and she's not particularly funny either- I am convinced she has become the most successful member of the Friends cast, purely because of her relationship with Brad Pitt.

As for actors I like. I am a fickle being and I like to see things with Orlando Bloom in, just to see how he looks (by no mean do I think it's a better film because of it :D). And Any film is made better by an appearance from Christopher Lee- regardless what it is (this includes Hammer Horror films lol!). But on the whole I don't generally feel compelled to watch a film because X actor is in it.

Brit: on Shia LaBouef I have no idea how he made a transition from a Disney comedy actor- doing really stupid stuff like Even Stevens and Holes, and then became some action hero- it makes no sense!! Whatever I see him in- he's still just "That kid from Even Stephens Grown Up " Which is probably why I find him kinda annoying in his new films!

Lith- I'm torn on Liam Neeson- don't get me wrong he's a fantastic actor, but for me he seems to go too often for slightly tacky action roles over something awesome with more weight behind it. I think cause the first things I saw him in were Star wars, Narnia and Love Actually it doesn't seem right that this fatherly, wise, nice guy figure suddenly wants to be the tough fighter guy.

^I haven't seen anything else that he's in besides Batman and Narnia, or wait, was he in that movie Taken? I saw it but I cant remember if that was him or not...

Liam Neeson was in Taken, yeah. I think in his action movies like Taken or The A-Team, he does combine the fatherly affection with his tough nature. And he definitely does the tough badass really well.

Nicholas Cage is a really selective taste. I actually like the guy. I just saw him with Drive Angry and really there really isn't anyone else who can pull off sleeping with a waitress fully dressed with the woman naked and a gun in one hand, a bottle of Jack Daniel's in the other, a cigar in his mouth, and sunglasses over his eyes. His hammy acting is what makes him enjoyable. If you want to see him in a subdued role, check him out in Lord of War.

Some more additions to the turn-off list.

Julia Roberts. She honestly seems to play the same role and unlike Summer Glau or Hugo Weaving, she doesn't seem to enjoy it. She's kinda like "Ahhh I'm here and I'm just floating around...." She seems like a fairy tale princess but even more sedated. Honestly she acts like she's on freakin' Xanax.

Seth Rogen. In my attempt to enjoy Christoph Waltz in The Green Hornet, I had to bear some minutes of this dumbhead and oh my god, he was such a prick. Granted, maybe that's on purpose, but that's still his fault because he wrote the damn movie. There's a scene where he's getting shot at and gets picked up by Kato and he quips "This is dangerous" Ha bloody ha! Now go **** off and die. Movie, I'm sorry, I don't care if Christoph Waltz just murdered a bunch of innocent people at a night club, they all probably deserved it.

Awesome thread idea! Agree with a lot of your choices, the good and the bad. So here's a few of mine.

The Good:

Michael Fassbender: All omgsohot-ness aside. He is an absolutely tremendous actor. He has fantastic range and he has a presence that just draws you in no matter what role he's doing. Could even be considered underrated.

Hugh Jackman: A man with so much versatility that he can go from playing a flamboyant gay man in the theater to playing arguably one of the toughest Marvel characters of all time. Has he been in stinkers? Yes but I don't think there's many actors out there that have been in a flawless movie every role.

Ben Foster: I really think this guy is criminally underrated.

Angelina Jolie: Say what you will about her but no-one can deny the talent she has.

Jessica Biel: I just love her. I think perhaps she's often overlooked.

Summer Glau: If you've ever seen the River Tam Sessions, you'll understand why she's on my list. Truly astounding actress.

The Bad:

Megan Fox: I can't even look at this woman without my blood boiling and I'm about to go into an apopleptic rage. Useless, talentless and really not even that hot she looks trashy and like she carries a vast array of STDs.

Seth Rogen: See above minus the STDs. I can't believe for a minute that guy gets laid.

Jack Black: I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with Jack. He has the potential to be watchable [Tropic Thunder] but generally he gets my goat and I wanna smash his face in everytime he's mugging it up on screen.

Kirsten Dunst: I think the only time I fully enjoyed watching her act was when she was Claudia in Interview With The Vampire. I grew to steadily dislike her more and more and more with every Spider-Man movie.

1. Viggo Mortensen- He's just good hands down!

2. Kathrine Heigel- I love her movies, shes just a really good actress and has really good movies.

3. Kat Dennings- She's really funny and I loved her in the House Bunny and Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist.

4. Anne Hathaway-She plays alot of fun characters

5. Michael Fassbander- Loved him in 300 and Jane Eyre

Viggo is awesome, the movies of his I've been able to catch he does really well in. I also really like Alex O'Loughlin, the only movie that I've seen him in is The Backup Plan (not sure if he's been in others) it didn't do that great at theaters, but I enjoyed it, and I thought he did a really good job. And I agree with Ashwise, I always enjoy a Anne Hathaway movie!

I dont like Angelina Jolie, strange opinion I know, but I've just never found her stuff fantastic, and I'm sick of hearing about her all the time. I cant stand Megan Fox movies, partly because I dont like her acting, and partly because I'm just sick of hearing about her as well.

I am also hiding my copy of "Happy Gilmore' from Lembas....

Fantastic idea!

Love:

James McAvoy: Love, love, love, love, love...I don't think I could say this too many times! :-D Amazing in X-Men Firstclass, Penelope, awesomenessa in The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, and pretty good in Becoming Jane.

Hugh Jackman: Cannot say enough about this man! :swoon:

Gerard Butler: Come on! The Phantom of the Opera, Timeline, How to Train Your Dragon...LOVE him! And his Scottish accent... :swoon:

Mel Gibson: Great actor (hides from people throwing things her way) not to say that I like his personal life, but hey, he is a great actor! The Patriot, Ransom, Braveheart, even Pocahontas was good!

Liam Neeson: Yep!

David Wenham: Since I am in LOVE with Faramir, I think I shan't say anything more. ;-)

Gary Sinise: Picky about him. He is AMAZING on NY CSI, Fallen Angel, Ransom, and Forest Gump. Not especially fond of his dirty mouth but he is a great actor and I have a great deal of respect for him.

Richard Armitage: Drools all over her keyboard....

Loath List:

Jack Nicholson: Creepy, creepy, creepy! He just scares me! :hide:

Dennis Quaid: He's okay, but he totally ruined Vantage Point for me with one crappy line.

Elvis Presley: Runs screaming out the door with hands pressed over her ears every time he is on tv...yeah, pretty much says it all.

Will Ferrell: Lame is the only work that comes to mind, but I've heard that Elf is good, just can't work myself up enough to even try to watch anything with him in it.

?: I don't know his name, but he plays in Underdog as the mad scientist's sidekick with the burned thesaurus. I think he also does the voice of Kronk in Emperor's New Groove. I did laugh, but he always plays the same type of role, if he tried something else I might be persuaded to like him. Just wish I could think of his name...correction, I don't even think I know his name, I never bothered to look.

Ok :)

I love:

ORLANDO BLOOM: all time favourite actor. i don't care how bad the film is, i just LOVE him :boing:
Will Smith: Can never get bored of watching Will. He can be dead funny, and his versatility is tremenduous - take for instant his part in I, Robot and I Am Legend.
Robert Pattinson: eek! Vampire! :swoon: huhhhhhhhhhh :)
Taylor Lautner: One pet i'd like
Johnny Depp: I restrain myself from writing a 1000-word paragraph on how much i adore this man.
Helena Bonham Carter: Likewise :-D
Liv Tyler: My second favourite character in LOTR...and the daughter of the singer in one of my favourite bands :goofy:
Hugh Jackman: I love this Aussie!
Angelina Jolie: ;-) She's awesome
Joseph Gordon Levitt: OMG!! :-o AMAZING
Leonardo DiCaprio: amazzzzzzzzinnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnggggggggggggggggggggggggggg
Jason Isaacs: I love him in Harry Potter, and in Peter Pan, and yeah! Just like him alot.
Milla Jovovich: i thought she was great in Resident Evil
Kristen Stewart: Highly underrated, in my opinion
Clare Danes: Another good actress

Perhaps i've done too many :p Now for the bad ones:
I HATE:
Megan Fox: urgh, just the mention of her :explode:
Gerard Butler: I just don't like him, especially in 300...though i did enjoy him in P.S I Love You, but then i suppose you can't dislike him in that

ok, for some reason i've got a mental block :frust: i just can't think of anyone i dislike, but there are many. I'll have to post them again when i remember

Real quick...

Good
Cate Blanchett
Tobey Maguire
Emmy Rossum
Johnny Depp (later, post-having kids roles)
Orlando Bloom (alright movies, yummy actor)
Gerard Butler (terrible movies, but I'm in love with him)

Bad
Gerard Butler (like I said, he has a positive talent for doing horrible projects. :teehee: I pick which of Gerry's movies to watch very carefully)
Jack Nicholson (I know he has an Oscar or two and everything, but I gotta agree with Laesneniel-- he's just too creepy)
Every comedy actor (pretty much ditto what Caunion said)

I'm sure there's more. I'll probably edit when I think of them.

Oh Michael Fassbender is a definite must-watch no matter what he's in. He is just absurdly talented. He and Cillian Murphy need to be in a movie together. Oh my god, how great would that be. Or better yet, I would love to see what either Christopher Nolan or Martin Scoresse can turn from him. MAN! Did Tarantino help uncover a fabulous gem here. I am so freakin' glad he's out there making a name for himself.

I will also like to add Carey Mulligan who is not only cute as a button but just captivating as an actress. You instantly feel sympathy for her even she's making really silly decisions. I would actually love to see her try to act as a serial killer because I think even then you would look at her and think she's innocent. In a way, she kinda does what Julia Roberts does....only much less obnoxious. She actually does remind me a bit of Natalie Portman, as well.

Actors that turns me on:

Malcolm McDowell. I haven't seen a poor performance with him, though I have seen poor films by him. He always chooses interesting parts and always try to make the best out of them. I think Malcolm is always a good reason to watch the film.
Favourite role: Alex DeLarge in A Clockwork Orange.

Jason Isaacs. He basically lifts up a movie or TV show to a whole new level. I watched Brotherhood and Jason was the only actor I recognised, but I enjoyed it basically because of him.
Favourite role: Colonel William Tavington in The Patriot.

Alan Rickman. He is just a joy to watch. I don't need any more explanation.
Favourite role: Severus Snape in the Harry Potter films.

Johnny Depp. I haven't seen a bad film with him yet and I always enjoy his presence on screen.
Favourite role: Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean films.

F. Murray Abraham. Now, I haven't seen that much of him, but it is a joy to watch and hear him in anything.
Favourite role: Antonio Salieri in Amadeus.

Jeremy Irons. He is just amazing and I would watch anything with him, basically.
Favourite role: Humbert Humbert in Lolita.

Jim Carrey. I would watch anything with him just to see him!
Favourite role: Joel Barish in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Probably more, but these are the actors I like the most in any film. I might update with actresses as well.

Actors that turns me away:

Brad Pitt. Can't stand that man's face and I don't like his acting.
Sandra Bullock. I never liked her very much and she is never a reason for me to watch a film.
Kristen Stewart. I have only seen three of her films, but her performances in those are not good enough for me to be interested in a film. There must be other reasons.
Robert Downey Jr. I never liked him from the first moment I saw him. I don't know, I just can't enjoy him.
Pierce Brosnan. I have a hard time watching his presence in films. I never really liked him.
