Here's a hint for you Elf Girl.

Carry around a little notepad while you're at school. That way, when you have those sudden ideas, you can write them down at the first free moment you get. Then maybe you won't forget!

Thanx Mayawen, that's a cool idea. : ) Just watch out my History teacher realize I spend 2/3 of her hours making up names ... She's gonna kill me. =D

Amoniel, congrats! Share it w/ us! :innocent: ;)

I was curious - does anyone find that they have certain things the inspire/influence them? I've realised that there's one CD I've got (my mum actually found it at the library - it's classical music) ... and I find it so much easier to write when I'm listening to it! It's weird!

I was listening to a song the other day, and realised that the words reflect how my character feels at one point in my story... am I just obsessive about what I write, or has anyone else found that sort of thing, too? :confuzzled:

If anyone's interested, I've posted some of the novel I'm writing on my website. I would greatly appreciate feedback - I think. :) (Also would be happy to read stuff other people have written...)

Herenya, I know exactly what you mean about finding things that help you write better. For me, my full concentration and talent seems to come when I'm writing with a pen in a notebook. If I'm using a computer, or using a pencil instead of a pen, the words just don't come as well.

And I just read the prelude to your novel, cuz I am pressed for time and couldn't read more, but I luv it so far! I feel kinda confused. (But that's a good thing in a prelude, cuz it drew me in) Now I want to read more!!!

And, just to let you know, you can call me Maya for short. :-D

Really? If I'm making notes, it has to be by hand. I can't think about that sort of thing without a pen in my hand. (So I'll do that sort of thing on paper and type it out later...) I perfer to write on a computer, because I am constantly changing things, and I find it's faster. I'll write bits and pieces by hand, but I always end up with arrows and footnotes and comments in the margin all over the whole thing, and then I get frustrated because it's unreadable...

Oh, I'm glad you liked my prologue! :) I know it's confusing... I think it's meant to be. The rest of it is rather straight forward in comparison...

I still edit my stories on the computer, even though I write in notebooks. After a story in a notebook is finished, I transfer it to a computer so it can go through a stage of editing before I give it to others to read. And then they're spared the trouble of desciphering my handwritting....

But I'm really really really really happy cuz I just got a new computer! Well, what I mean by 'new' is a used computer that my friends had but didn't use so they gave it to me! It's only a '98. But hey! That's high-tech!
My old computer was a '93!

This is what happened to the '93. :throw:

Hehehe. We have a "92" computer - it doesn't even have a colour screen!

I edit my stories heaps, especially as I go, but it doesn't seem to really bother my if some of my friends read my drafts. Once for English had to get someone to "proof" read a story, and my friend wrote all these in-LOTR jokes as comments, which I doubt my teacher would have understood... :p

I only read a few paragraphs in the prologu, but what I've read I can tell it's going to be a very good story :-D I'll be back to read more when I have more time....

No, not really. Most of my stories are based off images that I've dreamt.

I think, with writing, you just have to perservere. You've got to tell yourself that there are no rules, so you've got to set those rules for yourself.

I remember reading something that went: "free yourself from the games of others and the expectations they impose on you. Free yourself to play your own game." :)

Wow! What a good quote!

On the subject of dreams, has anyone seen the characters from a story you've written in your dreams? I totally have! In one, my character, Ladelia, was walking down the street across from me and she actually turned and looked at me!

In the second, I actually lived out a scene from one of my books as my character, Kirali. That was really awesome! Then I did one of those half-woke-up-then-fell-back-asleep things. When I fell asleep again, I was the same character, but my real life dog was there and I was eating potato chips! Wierd huh?

I've never had many inspirational dreams. I've only dreamed about my story three times that I can remember, and that's surprising considering how much I write and think about it

when I do have dreams about my story, it's usually a blend of the current books I'm obsessing over, RPGs I've joined, and my story.

Hey, I'm writing a book, and am already half way through. It's entitled Fires of the Phoenix, and I think I have the prologue posted somewhere... Anyway, the characters in it are in fact all from my dreams, so there's a thought.

Generally I've turned dreams into stories, rather than dreaming about my stories...

However, it happened once. I was the main character... anyway, I got the whole idea for a sequel. What happens next to the characters.
However, it involves the characters having to hide in a certain place, and I cannot come up with a plausible reason for them to do so... it's so annoying - great plot, but no way of explaining how the characters really came to be in that situation, because it's set in present day. So I think I might be tempted to write the sequel in another era, or turn it into a fantasy. Weird, but it would seriously work...

Maya, the quote's from this "Manifesto for Children".
Quote:
Don't be afraid to fall in love with something
and pursue it with intensity.

Know, understand, take pride in, practice, develop, exploit
and enjoy your greatest strengths.

Learn to free yourself from the expectations of others
and to walk away from the games they impose on you.

Free yourself to play your own game.

Find a great teacher or mentor who will help you.

Learn the skills of interdependence.

Don't waste energy trying to be well rounded.

Do what you love and can do well.
