I had to write this for a writing class. We had to put some words in, which is why I wasn't too worried about the technical quality of the story.

“Come on you two! We’ll be late for the Cupcake Parade!” Seven year old Mango Neon skipped along the sidewalk ahead of two boys, carrying a plastic singing bass she had just bought at a booth. It belted out “Heartbreak Hotel” in a deep bass whenever the red, metal button on it was pressed. This happened far too often, in Rio Garcia’s, the latter boy’s, opinion. He loathed Elvis Presley. He and his best friend Elijic Davies had beamed into another world, called Galaxaria, three days ago. Their sometimes annoying neighbor Mango had followed them in, putting another responsibility upon their backs. She turned around. “Guys, if you don’t hurry up already, we won’t get good seats!”
“Mango, among the three of us, I don’t know if we have the right amount of money to pay for the parade.” Elijic pointed out.
“Well, between me and my friend here,” she allusioned to the fish, “we have seventeen dollars, and-” She dumped some coins out of his mouth, “thirty-nine cents. So there.”
“But Mango, earth money isn’t any good here! And I’m about ready to throw that singing fish of your’s up on the roof!”
“I won’t let you! Anyway, I think his dark green and white coloration complements my shirt.”
Later, the trio continued down the street, gazing at all the amazing booths and displays at the 300th annual Shoggawog Day Festival in downtown Euroto, the capital state of Galaxaria, the world they were in. Shoggawog is a holiday celebrating food, and fun. The month-long celebration in Euroto attracts denizens from all over the universe; including the three kids. They passed by an illusion stand with holograms dancing to a disco-like song on a base made of chocolate, then a stand selling some hamster-like animals with rabbit ears. Mango smiled as a white and black one sniffed her finger through the cage bars. She gave the boys Bambi eyes. “Please?” She sniffed a little. “Please can I get him? He likes me.” Her lip started quivering as she squeezed her eyes to make them water. Elijic rolled his eyes. “No. Stop that, I said no. N-O, that means no!”
“P-p-please? See, he comes with a little basket that you hang on your arm, and some food, and a water dish, and a little toy, and, and- PLEASE?”
“Fine. How much does he cost?” The kid selling them glanced at him.
“Five meldias. But for you, we’ll accept four.” Elijic turned to Mango.
“That’s almost all the money we have at the moment. Sorry.”
“You and Rio could find jobs, then we could get him, and go to the parade.” She sniffled a little more, and blinked back tears. Elijic sighed. “Fine, whatever. You choose that one, right?” He handed his most of his capital over to the boy, who in return handed him the little animal in its basket. They walked off, Rio with his hands in his empty pockets, Elijic shaking his head, and Mango triumphantly strolling along with her fish in one arm, and the hapless rodent in the other. “Look at him Rio! Isn’t he the cutest thing you ever saw? I’m gonna name him Lily-left-foot, because his back left paw is white, and he rest of his leg is black. But I’ll call him Lily for short, or maybe I should call him Left, or maybe even Foot. What do you think, ‘Lijic?”
“I think that if they had begging in the Olympics, you’d win the gold medal.”
“Really? What a compliment! Maybe we should start a petition to get it in, and you two could be my trainers, and we’d go out to the track every day, and I could practice on you so I get all ready! Then we could go to Beijing or Vancouver, except I don’t know if it would be a summer or winter sport. Have you two chose where you’re gonna work yet? The parade starts in fewer minutes than it seems.” Rio, in a less patient mood than usual, whispered,
“Elijic, do you think that maybe we could leave her at the parade? It’d give us a few hours of freedom.”
“Sure. Ahem, Mango, we’re going to let you go watch the parade, okay? Go over there, sit down, and don’t move for any reason, ‘kay?”
“Okay! I’ll be good, I promise. Can I have the ticket money now? I need to hurry up so I can get past that crowd heading over there.”
“Here. And be sure to tell us how well the Riliance Marching Orchestra does when we come get you.” Mango skipped off while Rio and Elijic trudged along in the opposite direction. They found job near the capitol building cooking fattening whirly fries and healthful quimndie shrimp for customers with more-than-healthy appetites. Soon, Rio decided to emigrate outside of the hot trailer, and slumped against the wall, exhausted. He picked his head up. There was some sort of commotion going on on the other side of the little building he was leaning on. Rio climbed up a nearby ladder to see what the hubbub was about. He couldn’t believe his eyes- Mango was riding on the biggest float of all, with the Cupcake Queen crown on her head, and the mayor of Riliance sitting next to her. A huge banner across the front of the chocolate frosted float said “Immigrate to Riliance.” Rio ran across the roof and down the other side right as the float went by. Mango waved to him. “Hi, Rio! Guess what? This float won the contest, and I was crowned the Cupcake Queen! I won 10,000 meldias! I’ll meet you when the parade’s over. We still have twelve blocks to go!” Mango let go of a few hundred green and yellow balloons, and the crowd cheered.
Rio made his way back to the food stand and told Elijic what he just saw.
“I just don’t believe it. Here we were slaving away while she’s winning money and riding on a float! It’s just not fair!”
