This is basically about a seventeen-year-old girl who sleeps in an enchanted valley one night and wakes up the next morning to find that her dream has come true. She must send all the creatures back to their own realm...
Evanlyn patted her tired horse encouragingly. They had been going all day, away from the battle. Now they were hopelessly lost. There was a stream nearby- Evanlyn could hear it. But, of course, she couldn't find it in the dark. Flint, her horse, stamped impatiently. They could speak in each other's minds, but now they chose not to. They were far too tired. Finally, Flint spoke.
~We'll stop here for the night.~ he decided. Evanlyn refused, but Flint would go no further. He began to lay down, and Evanlyn knew she had to consent or get squished. She'd rather stay the size she was, so she quicky dismounted.
~We're leaving early tomorrow morning.~ she said, scowling. Then she climbed a tall, thick tree and settled herself into a crook. Sleep came upon her rapidly, and soon Evanlyn was dreaming of mystical creatures, good and bad, all around her. A couple times during the night she was startled into wakefulness, only to find that everything was perfectly fine. Of course.
The next morning, Evanlyn woke to plenty of new sounds. In fact, she couldn't hear the stream anymore.
~That's odd.~ she told Flint, who snorted in response. He was still asleep.
Evanlyn crested a hill and looked down from atop a small cliff. What met her eyes made her gape in confusion. Every creature from her dream was down there, doing as they pleased. There were plenty of unicorns, gryphons, phoenixes, and centaurs. They mingled around the stream, and some were actually talking to each other. Evanlyn slowly descended the cliff, and every living thing down there looked up at her. The only creature that caught her eye was a beautiful unicorn stallion. He had a red body and blue stripes on his legs. His horn was probably about a foot long, and it had a small, yet noticeable sapphire on the end of it. Evanlyn stared at him as he approached her.
"Evanlyn, no?" he asked. Evanlyn gulped and nodded. This unicorn was talking to her!
"You created this, Evanlyn. Your dreams have become real. This is called the Valley of Dreams. When you sleep here, your dreams, if any, become reality. Every creature from a person's dreams comes from a realm called Avonlea. And every creature must be returned to that realm by sunset. I, Hadrian, will help you, but you must do most of this yourself. You dreamt us, so you must therefore return us to our own land. Can you do it, Evanlyn?" he asked at the end of his speech. Evanlyn nodded slowly.
"I can do it." she replied confidently. "I can."
"Now then, sit here." Hadrian ordered Evanlyn. She obeyed the stallion and sat on a flat rock.
"What do I do?" she asked. Hadrian seemed to smile, if unicorns can do that.
"Make yourself calm. Block out any sounds that you can hear, except your heartbeat. Close your eyes, and search through your mind." he explained slowly so Evanlyn would catch all of it.
"What am I searching for?" Evanlyn asked, confused. She opened her eyes. Hadrian looked into them.
"Well, everyone is unique. You are searching for a thread of magic the color of your eyes. Please tell me you know the color of your eyes." he said amusingly. Evanlyn giggled.
"Yes, I know the color of my eyes. They're silver." she replied. Hadrian nodded.
"Exactly. Now look for a silver thread in your mind. When you find it, take hold of it and enter." he added to his long explanation. Evanlyn did as she was told for the second time. She went deep into her mind and found her silver thread. She looked it over from every angle in her mind, and then found a small slit in it. She allowed herself to enter. Inside, there were many colors. They all swirled around in a sort of pool. Evanlyn was confused. When she looked at the pool one way, it was only one solid color. When she looked at it another way, it was many colors mixed in together yet not making one color.
"Have you found it?"Hadrian asked quietly. Evanlyn nodded. She hadn't blocked out his voice in fear of losing herself. "Good. Now, immerse yourself in the colors and just picture each and every creature. They will disappear as you remember each one."
Evanlyn did as she was told for the THIRD time. She pictured every character, and even though she couldn't see it, they all disappeared, gone back to their own realm. When she finally opened her eyes, Hadrian was the only one left.
"I am forever in your debt, Evanlyn, but I can never pay you back. Once you stumble across this valley and leave it, you will never be able to come back. Thank you for your help. I will never forget it." he said. Then he sprouted wings with a span of about thirty feet and took off into the air, vanishing from sight at about twenty feet. Evanlyn blinked and sat on the ground. Suddenly hoofbeats caused her to look up. Flint stood there, yawning.
~Time to go.~ he said. Evanlyn laughed heartily and agreed. The smart horse hadn't even noticed what had happened.
As Evanlyn and Flint rode off together in companionably silence, Evanlyn wondered what would happen to Hadrian and the others. As the sun set in the far distance, Evanlyn swore she could've seen Hadrian's outline on the horizon before it disappeared completely.
The End
