'Even so' it is well, they have spoken, But from my Hell, I have not yet broken, For love is not my own domain, It is but a fleeting, turning, fancy. So I spoke in my younger years, Filled with my great hopes and fears, Now here in my latter days I have learned the old, true ways. Back in those fire-headed times, When I forsook complacency, that crime, I found a heart who held me fast, Whose memory has never passed. It danced with my soul, in one communion, And we had many, moon-lit reunions, But then you fell from my hand That had promised you to never let go. And then my love fell into the sea, Breaking my soul, once burning and haughty, Then I retreated, and held back from the world That by which my soul had been cursedly unfurled. Many wanderings I had in those month and years, Which no annals can recall, because of my fear, I stood alone in the Ocean's mists and waves, Hoping the storm my guilt to stave. Then I saw a lighthouse's light, A beacon into my oblivious night, It came to me and took me, hand in hand, And I stood stupid, not able to understand. Suddenly it came to me, on the shores of Benghazi, That I had found what had forever sought me, And my love finally turned its mind away from my guilt, And then I took her with me, back to my home. Then we sat down in the old lands And sang together with the fireflies in the night, 'Even so, it is well with my soul.' |
