June 4, 1928

Normal start today, woke early and breakfasted with John and
Parker. When we got around to the building on the N side of the
sight got a little surprise. We found a chest of written records.
Awfully peculiar they survived. One stood out, though.

[note in the margin: remember to date runes]
Norāthonkūl wōloem ēbdūmdin,
“Nowīlomkūl dok nothle elmûnmak,
Hū emrōduthom thunuō.”
Trans.
The two kings from the undercity say,
"We still reign among the stones,
Defying the Besieger of the World."

This most peculiar writing was found in written in fuþark on one
of the oldest seeming scrolls. The runes were easy enough, but the
language is something else. Don’t quite know how I understood
this one, just came into mind after some thought. I’d best not let
the thought occupy me too much though. We must finish the excavation.
Several other artifacts at the site were found the rest of day. All for now.
