Post subject:  Starlight's Spray [A Poem by Altariel Frodo]

I rarely post writing here - I only have maybe once or twice in my almost-2-and-a-half years here - but I decided to go ahead and give it a try. This poem is written in the form of a Sestina - the form is fairly strict, but I enjoy it. The title was inspired by Tolkien's character Elwing; the theme I tried to write on was hope. Feedback and comments are welcome. :)

Starlight's Spray
Written December 28, 2008

Trapped in a crystal, I am so numb
I can't feel the warmth of my own breath.
I am the self-centered sacrifice
that will drift away like the cold mist
left by a single wave's icy spray.
I will whisper the final farewell.

My heart trembles at the word “farewell,”
and I wish that I could be so numb
as to ignore the sea of death's spray.
My heart keeps beating for just one breath,
just one last strand of oxygen's mist.
Love becomes the living sacrifice.

I would give it all up, sacrifice
all that I am just to say farewell
to this veil of ice. I feel the mist
shroud my heart, and though I feel so numb
I will cry out with this faded breath
and beg for rescue from the rain's spray.

Like dusty grains of sand, the stars spray
from a broken tree of sacrifice.
I drink in the gritty light, and breath
touches the ice as I say farewell.
I fall to my knees; my limbs are numb,
but warm tears blur my eyes with their mist.

I blink away the treacherous mist,
the tears that sting like the ocean's spray.
Bleeding hurts more than remaining numb,
but I'm ready for that sacrifice.
I will bid the broken shell farewell
and I'll breathe in a new kind of breath.

Stirring my heart, I feel a strange breath,
pure but blurred, like sunrise dulled by mist.
It breathes with an absence of farewell,
washing over me with love's clean spray.
It is tied into the sacrifice
made so I would not have to be numb.

I see hope's breath in the starlight's spray,
a song's mist hallows the sacrifice
as I say farewell to what was numb.
