Yes, I am starting another fanfic! ![]() ![]() ![]() Enjoy! ![]() ~~~ Spring slung her cotton bag, which had been lying discarded on the floor of the caves, over her slim shoulders, looking around. The Glittering Caves of Helm’s Deep were slowly emptying as families went to find each other; mothers went looking for their sons who had fought in the battle. Many of them would be disappointed; from what Spring had heard Rohan had triumphed by the skin of it’s teeth. Her mistress, the Lady Éowyn had departed to find Lord Aragorn; as her lady in waiting, Spring sensed that she had developed a soft spot for the heir of Gondor. And who could help but to? He was a fine man, that was for certain. Spring’s heart might just have been lost to him as well if it had not already been taken. Spring gave a faint smile as the thought went through her head. Was that indeed what it was? Her heart was taken? She did not have a suitor, but she did have somewhat of a crush on a certain young man. He, of course, had no idea of it, and that was just as well. Her footsteps took her out of the cave; she was glad to be getting out of there, after having spent hours sheltered with the other women and their children. She had started to get claustrophobic; she needed to feel the fresh breeze on her face. She needed to feel free. Freedom was something she had always needed. She could not endure being cooped up; and if she admitted it, she would have rather have liked to have fought in the battle. She had no skill with a sword, as no one had ever taught her, but she envied the men that they should be able to stand up to their foes. Suddenly, she collided with someone who had thought to walk past her into the caves; she bumped her shoulder against theirs and she looked up to face them, cringing. She obviously hadn’t been looking where she was going as she had been thinking. “I’m sorry,” she said, before she properly registered exactly who it was she was talking to. She frowned and looked into the face of Éomer, the king’s nephew and Éowyn’s brother. He gave a short laugh. He looked tired and was still clad for battle, a sword strapped to a belt on his waist. “No matter. Your mind was obviously elsewhere.” Spring had to admit, that stung, and she didn’t entirely like his tone. Still, he was weary from battle, she had to allow him that. “Have you seen the Lady Éowyn?” Spring composed herself, rubbing her sore shoulder. “She is not here. She went to find the Lord Aragorn.” Her tone had a slight hint of pride. As her lady in waiting, of course she knew where she had gone. “Oh. I see.” He frowned. “Are you sure?” “Yes, I am sure,” she said coolly. “I am her ladyship’s lady in waiting. I make it my business to be aware of these things.” Her self-assurance head-to-head with the king’s nephew, a strong man in battle, and a fierce opponent when angered, was impressive. “Oh,” Éomer said. “Oh, I’m sorry. It completely slipped my mind that I’d seen you before.” He shook his head. He was obviously quite tired and forgetful, but Spring’s irritation had been kindled, and she was not about to let this go. “I had no idea I was so very forgettable,” she said with a small shrug, her blue-grey eyes meeting his without wavering. “I am very glad that you think I should blend into the background so well.” Her tone was even and calm, but Éomer did not miss the edge to it. “Forgive me, my lady, but I am, frankly, exhausted and much desire to see my sister,” he said crisply. “I did not intend to give any offence.” “Oh, no one could suspect you of meaning to offend,” Spring murmured, casting her gaze down to her feet. It was an innocent move, but another strike. “If you’d kindly step aside,” Éomer suggested, reclaiming his patience. Spring shook her head. “As I said, my lord. Her ladyship is not within the caves. She departed to see Lord Aragorn, and I am sure she is speaking with him at this moment.” Éomer nodded. “Very well. I shall go and look for her.” He was about to walk past when Spring reached out and very softly put her hand on his arm to keep him where he was. “Forgive me, my lord,” she said quietly, “but I think your sister would like to speak with his lordship alone.” Éomer’s eyes blazed at her. “You order me to stay away from my own sister?” he demanded. “No, not at all.” The inclination to fight him was fading, but Spring still remained determined. She knew that Éowyn had wanted to find Aragorn by herself. She had been worried about him, and had wanted to make sure he had not been harmed in the battle. She deserved one moment alone with him, Spring was sure. “I only think you should consider her wishes.” “A mere lady in waiting will not issue commands to me,” Éomer said. “As Éowyn wishes, then. I shall find her later. But I take my leave of you, my lady.” “Spring,” Spring supplied, averting her gaze so as not to anger him more than necessary. But he should at least make sure to remember her name. “Thank you,” Éomer said, and walked past her, his stride swift and taking him away from her quickly. Spring watched him silently. To think a few moments ago I declared to myself that my heart belonged to him. She shook her head, and gave a tiny laugh. |
