Just felt like starting a topic
I was wondering when people started reading FotR, why they were inspired to do so and whether they have any funny stories about it.
I first read LotR when I was 9 (with the help of a dictionary) because I absolutely adored the hobbit. When I told my mother I wanted to buy it she told me that she had a copy in the loft and so I hauled the giant hard-back three in one book down-stairs and read it. It was really a coincidence because when I was half-way through FotR I saw ads for the movie on TV.

I read it first when I was 10 years old. I read it because my parents said that I had to if I wanted to see the movies. So origionally I just read the books to see the movies. But I got so incredibly sucked into the books on that first night I began (February 4th, 2002) that after that I didn't care about the movies anymore (until I saw them ). I remember reading the Ring-spell for the first time, and being wholly enchanted.

I started it on my 11th birthday, because FotR had come out in theaters just a few months earlier, and I was a very avid fan of it, and because I loved The Hobbit. So, my parents got me a 3-in-1 book, and I started on my birthday and finished them all two days later. It was fun.

I read it the year I turned 12. Last summer, that is. I read the hobbit when I was really little and this Summer I read the rest of Tolkien's writings.
What made me want to read it.... we had to read it before we saw the movies and my sister was reading them aloud and I couldn't wait for the ending.

My cousin didn't stop talking about LOTR at home, and he offered me The Hobbit when I was 10. I've loved it and 2 years later I've decided to start reading LOTR.

I bought the three-in-one book (paperback) when I was 8. I was fascinated after I watched the first movie and thought I'd try it.
At home, I tried reading it, but being rather dim (:P) didn't finish. Then, sometime this year...I SUDDENLY got obsessed and just HAD to re-read it. So here I am, reading it and I'm captivated by it. I want to read The Hobbit and all so forgive me if I'm rather slow-going right now.

I first started reading LotR when I was 8, because my older sister (Ivreniel) just had, and was scared stiff by it. So, naturally, I just HAD to find out what was so scary for myself. But I never actually finished it until 10, before that, I was quite happy reading up to "Many Meetings", and going no further. After finishing LotR, well... let's just say I was never the same again.

My wonderful LOTR obsessed buddy insisted I read The Hobbit. So I did. Then she insisted I read LOTR. So I did. Then she insisted I watch the movies...and I became obsessed with LOTR/Tolkien.

Here's my lovely story...
It was 2003. I was an eleven-year old in sixth grade, and my friend had announced that she had seen the most awesome thing - Return of the King, newly released in theaters. My friend often obsessed over movies, but this was different - I had a strong desire to see this movie, having heard barely anything about it. Alas, it was rated PG-13, and my mother would hear nothing of my going to see it in theaters.
So I settled to read the books. And, wow, I was hooked immediently. I had finished FotR and TTT and had skimmed RotK (hey, I was pretty Tolkein-ed out by that point ) and had seen the first two movies before my mother finally relented, and in late January, my dad took me to see Return of the King. It was truly awesome.
Since then I've reread the books 3 times and am currently in the middle of my 4th re-read. (Yes, I've read them once each year since discovering them.) I deeply regret not being able to have seen all 3 movies on the big screen, but I watch the extended editions often at home.
Note: My friend is no longer obsessed. There was a Golden Age in 6th grade when we both discussed the finer points of LotR endlessly, but her attention span was rather short. Though she introduced me into A-U, she never bothered to join the forum, and has since moved on to different things.

I first read lotr when I was 11 years old. I was at my cousin's home and I found this big book on her shelf.I am an avid reader so I took the book and started reading it. It was so nice at first then scary but I didn't stop until my aunt made me stop. Next day,I practically begged my cousin to give it to me. Since then I am a Tolkien/lotr/Hobbit freak.
