???? What do you mean by "much better?" Are you implying that that is how you think the Black Sea and Middle-earth correspond, or are you saying you wish that that was how it was? I don't really understand your statement.

I'm implying how I think Middle-Earth corresponds with modern Europe.

I think that the Sea of Rhun is too far north to be the Black Sea, but since I currently have neither a map of Earth or a map of Middle-earth available, I don't remember for sure.

Any chance Middle-Earth and modern Europe doesn't correspond at all? I mean, do we know that Tolkien created Middle-Earth basing it upon Europe?

I'm not sure. I hope he didn't, because I really don't like imagining them the same, but maybe someone else does know for certain that he did or didn't.

Yes he did base it on modern Europe. Or at least part of it. As far as I'm concerned, Tolkien thought that The Shire is supposed to be England. For the rest of Europe, nothing can be said for certain.

Where do you have that information from?

From one of the DVD disks (special features). There were various interviews of Tom Shippey, Brian Sibley, etc, etc and one talked about this fact. Cant remember who or which CD exactly.

Okay, I understand. I'd just never heard anything about it before, and I thought it sounded a bit weird. But of course, given the fact that he wanted to give Brittain a mythological history (or w/e to call it), it sounds logical, really.

Pardon me for asking but where is the Black Sea and why did Tolkien choose to set it there?!
P.S where do you get this sort of information?

Ok. Let me make this clear. I am not saying that Tolkien DID say the Black Sea IS the Sea of Rhun. It was just MY opinion on what I think.
Now, regards the Shire as being England, YES, as far as I'm concerned, Tolkien referenced the location of England upon the Shire.
NOW. Where did I get the information from (the Shire part I mean):- It was one of the special features interviews on the LoTR DVDs. Apologies for not knowing which DVD and which interview (since it has been a long while since I've seen them), but I will try and find it.
Thanks.
