I really can't decide. Tolkien is such a great writer and all of his books are amazing.

I like the Return of the King best. I understood it the best after all. The other books had more complicated language. . .

BUY IT! You must read it in order to understand everything! I am reading it right now, and trust me, it is VITAL information!

I really can't choose. I like all of them separately for different reasons. I like The Silmarillion for the 'bigness' of it all, if you follow me. I like The Hobbit because it is easy to read and I love the story. And my liking of The Lord of the Rings doesn't need an explanation. So really, I can't decide which I like best.

I'm not going to answer until I read the Sil. I checked it out from the library the other day but haven't started it yet b/c I want to finish the book i'm reading first.
Just my opininion but I think that FotR, TTT, and RotK should just be put under LotR b/c they aren't really independent books. FotR and TTT don't have endings its just like the next chapter when you pick up the next one. Therefore they are one story and it is impossible to choose between the three (for me anyways) its like asking do you like the beginning, middle or end of the book? when you liked the whoale thing

Well I love them all of course but the Sil is my fave. You could read it again and again and learn something new about the history of Arda each time. It's beyond me how Tolkien could write such an amazing piece of work. All the detail and thought in it. It's the closest thing to a Bible that I've ever read (yes I'm agnostic don't bite my head off).

LOL true it was written in that very old fashioned bible-style. It was never realised during Tolkien's lifetime, but he continued to work on it throughout his life, and it was only published due to the continued work of his son, Christopher. Thank god he did!

Why must I have an opinion on everything? *moans*
I said Unfinished Tales. Good book. I don't know that it's really my favorite though, I love them all.

Well, there are independent books, but most of the time I just refer to all of them as one. After all, Tolkien intended them to be just one book.

All LOTR books as one book... would have been a bit much for me! It would have scared me off due to sheer size...
