I love the story of Beren and Luthien. Its so romantic! Luthien would die for him. That is the ultimate sacrifice. I just LOVE it!

The Lay of Leithian is my favourite of all Tolkien's work. I don't generally like romance, the tale of Beren and Luthien in the Sil and Faramir and Eowyin in LotR are the only ones I like. I'm just so in love with the way Tolkien writes. I definitely think we should do it in school instead of Romeo and Juliet!
Btw, a couple of weeks ago my mum was in Oxford and she took some pictures of the grace. People had placed chains, rings, beads, shells and more on it. I haven't been lucky enough to go there myself yet, but my mum promised to take me when I'm better. Can't wait

Ohhh nooo. . . *runs to grab the book to read it before Larael Greenleaf grabs her pitchfork.*
(Actually, I did skim The Silmarillion before.)
(Oh, and Larael Greenleaf, can I shorten your name to either Larael or LG, or what do you prefer? I find that I have to refer to your name often when I post, and it seems a bit inconvenient to write out your whole name. Or would you prefer me to continue using your whole name?)

You can just call me Larael, I don't mind. Not LG though......I don't like the use of initials. Larael will do just fine though. Thanks Elberethsq!!

I have a question, how in the heck did Luthien ever braid her hair into a convincing cloak. And nobody better say duh, she's an elf

I don't know if she braided it, what she did is she cast a spell to make her hair grow very long, cut it off (most likely) and wove it with magic to make a shadowy cloak. I like the imagery.

Luthien did? Sorry, but I can't help you on that question, because I haven't reread the Silmarillion yet - so far I'm rereading FotR, TTT, and RotK, and then read the Sil.

She's an elf duh! (sorry couldn't resist!!)
Well... it seems to me like there's a lot more 'magic' in the Silmarillion than in LotR trilogy. The first and second ages are more mysterious and magical, as if anything can happen. The war between good and evil and all the characters it's all very symbolic and mythological in a very physical way! Like Lúthien shapeshifts as she struggles with Sauron and Elwing just turns into a bird....

I love that line too.
I'm not really into romance either but I love this story. Like you Lady Orohiesiel, the only romantic stories I've liked are Luthien and Beren and Faramir and Eowyn. Tolkien is such a wonderful author.
