There are conversations in The Silmarillion, but not as many as in The Lord of the Rings.

Has anyone read Unfinished Tales? I just bought it over the break. :-D

As much as i adore the Sil, i have to say LotR, maybe just because it's one big story about courage and hope and finding the wil to go on when no one thinks you can, and i think of the Sil as more just filling in the blanks. I mean, unless you're a total LotR freak (such as as . . i feel so at home here! lol) most ppl don't read the Sil - it's a great book, but i always like long stories better than short stories. It was close though! i love knowing all the backround stuff about the trilogy, i mean, i loved Unfinished Tales too, but for me they're more like, as the other have said Bibles or encyclopedias almost, rather than a story like LotR. my opinion only of course. XD

Perectly alright, Ardhoniel. It's not just your opinon. Others have expressed thoughts like yours.

:annoyed: :annoyed: :annoyed: *kicks computer* Sorry. Just frustrated. I'm trying to upload something from a disk and my computer won't co-operate. :annoyed2:

Anywho, The Silmarillion is like an encyclopedia. It explains everything that happened up to The Lord of the Rings, and fills you in on things not explained before. Thanks for your thoughts, Ardhoniel. :)

I´m also fascinated by the mythological aspect of the Sil. The whole creation myth (Valaquenta, Ainulindale)...is beautiful like I´ve almost never read before. Yeah, it is indeed one of the best books I´ve ever read, but LotR was Tolkien´s masterpiece in many ways.

Both The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion were masterpieces. Most people think only that The Lord of the Rings was a masterpiece because it was more publicized(sp?).

The Silmarillion was beautiful because it explains the history of Middle-earth in a way The Lord of the Rings didn't. Both are beautiful.

Yes, you´re absolutely right. Both are great. But LotR will always be my favorite.

Perfectly understandable.

I have a theory: Most people read The Lord of the Rings before they read The Silmarillion, so that's probably why most people prefer LotR to The Sil. (Obvious already, right?)

I´m not sure if that´s the reason. Of course, most of the people read LotR first, but there are also many that like the Sil more. I don´t think you can explain it that easy, because the Sil is so different from LotR in many ways that it really shows the personal tastes of the people what they like better.
Perhaps it has to do with the movies. That they made the story more imaginable and visual for many ppl. But I´m not sure about that.

^^ You have a good theory, ForeverFrodo. It may be because LotR is more publicized than The Sil. It's been made into movies twice.

That's a good theory. It's hard to compare the 2 of them, they're so diffferent. But as i read more of the Sil, i like it more, but i don't think anyone will ever write a book that will replace LotR as my fave book!

That´s exactly how I feel.

The Lord of the Rings has been my favourite for years, so in my opinion nothing can compare to it.

As some on here have already said, both the Silmarillion and the Lord of the Rings are great works of literature. I don't think I'd want to have to choose...

I guess what it is is that we're not comparing two of the same types of books. Silmarillion has much more of the feel of "legend", and LotR feels more "present", if that makes sense. It's like trying to decide whether an apple or an orange is better. They're just different--and both wonderful!

Or maybe I just wrote this post to make me feel better about being indecisive. 8)

I think we can all agree that both are great works of literature and can't be compared, like starflower said. However, I don't agree with the thing you said about not being able to compare apples and oranges. Apples are so much better :-D
