The Silmarillion is a wonderful book! It fills you in on the history and culture of Middle-earth before the and after the Rings were made. I liked it because of the depth it added to LotR, and it answered many of the questions I had. I suggest you read it.

It has so many details and information. It is a "must-read" for everyone who want to consider himself a Tolkien fan

I agree with Astaldo - it is vital. You can't be an authority on Middle-earth until you've read The Silmarillion

And then of course HoME and UT.

Yeah, but the Unfinished Tales should be read first - they have more to do with The Silmarillion than with the History of Middle Earth.

I agree. The HoME series are difficult to read too. Especially if yoy read them in English in the original language. Prof. Tolkien wrote with very difficult words.

^ I'm reading HoME right now. I love it, but I do agree- wait until after The Silmarillion and UT.

Of course. Otherwise you will not understand a lot of things.

^ Have you read The Book of Lost Tales 1 & 2?? They are also very good, if not I would recommend them.

Yes, me too. Anything that gives me any more information on Tolkien's world, I love.

I've only just started the Sil and so far I've read the first and the last part ( you know the Great Song and the Fall of Numenor). That was great!!
