why did it bother to run all the way up the Endless Stairs rather than just flying?

Well I guess it's the most obvious reason why it didn't just fly. Being trapped in Moria all those years and when discovered the Balrog was always inside, the wings got sort of stiff and for a time he could not have used them

I do believe that Balrogs had physical wings and they were able to fly. I also believe that they emitted fear and darkness around them.

Thanks,

My personal opinion is that the could not fly. They MAY however have had 'body wings' (we know they could have wings made out of there darkness) to use as intimidation.

Again the link I gave suggests many theories.

Balrog height is a more debatable theory however.

Yes I think that they were not as huge as the LOTR films depicted them. As is told in The Fellowship of the Ring, it is described that the Balrog had the shape like that of a man, but much bigger. I think that he might have been a maximum of 2.5 to 3 metres, at the very most.

I'm not sure what others think. Though I'm very curious. :)

Thanks,

Perhaps you should create a new thread on this Earendil, either on this site or Tolkien Forums to get the topic going.

You mean a thread on Balrogs' size?

Thanks,

according to this model: http://www.uniqueideas4gifts.co.uk/lotr ... atue-l.jpg the balrog does have wings, and i believe it, but i can think of two reasons why it wouldn't use them:

a// the wings may not be strong enough to actually carry the balrog, and they're just to make it look more menacing
b// the balrog doesn't know it has wings (i know, it sounds stupid, but the balrog doesn't seem like that smart a creature!!)

The former example of the Wings could not carry the Balrog is fairly plausable, but as Balrogs are Maiar, and therefore very wise creatures, it is doubtful stupidity would come into play.

oh yea i forgot... they're maiar.... lol whoops!! so now i'm 100% fixed on the fact that the wings are, in fact, just not strong enough to carry the balrog.

Btw, Firaeya, the link you posted about the model of the barlog, that is of Games Workshop and in turn they have based it upon the film. What is mainly concerned about whether the balrog's wings existed or no has to be found out from Tolkien's writings not the film.

**But great model indeed! :-D **

Thanks,

Could you provide solid evidence that they have body-wings?

I look forward to seeing it. This evidence will be revolutionary.
