oww, me too... It's such a strong quote, I always picture myself on the barricades fighting ignorant people who wants to limit the Freedom of Speech and I'm fighting for someone elses right that I don't even agree with.... like the people with different political points of views can be so tiresome... lol, but without their opinions.. mine would be worthless.... mmmm, OR without their opinions... my words would rule.... the world.... *goes off pondering*

:D

Ulmo strikes me as very caring, despite the massive power he has- he never forgets Middle-earth :)

True, Ulmo appears to be very caring.... he knows what is going on in Middle-earth and protects the elves through the waters. Good fellow!!!

Yes Melkor's story is somehow sad, he had it all and just wanted to make everything perfect in his own way.... he is Middle-earth's Judas and Anakin... mmm *tries to think of more* .... the fallen angel....
Also, he is needed in the mythologic universe to be the reason for bringing evil into the world... he is the opposite of good and without evil we wouldn't be able to tell what good was. He does not conform into regular norms and that's what is fascinating.... men are drawn to evil because it breaks the rules.... :pirate:

I can never feel sorry for Melkor... mainly because in The Silmarillion it says at one point that ALL love and goodness had vanished from his heart... therefore I really can't feel sorry for him.

Well, no.. true that he is the incarnation of evil.... and he is certainly not very friendly.... but I tend to read the Sil. on a more abstract level because it's like reading ...well, yeah, a history book or mythologies so it's easier to keep a distance (at least Quenta Silmarillion).
LotR trilogy is a novel and written that way so there I automatically identify with our heroes in their struggle against the enemy and I really hate Sauron and everything he stands for.

But don't you think it is sad that all good and all love had vanished from him. Imagine a life like that... having a cold heart merely beating, not being able to feel anything, not be able to fully live.... oops, sorry for getting carried away in empathies. Well.... anyway, for me Quenta Silmarillion is a mythologic tale and I see the characters as archetypes and I understand the part they each has to play

Hm... though it reads like a myth to me, the Silmarillion is still something I am 'involved' with, like most people are emotionally with characters in books... I still get attached to characters and can't keep them at a distance.

I really wish I could feel sad for Melkor... but I just can't. He is pure evil, has no cares whatsoever for anything except himself. Therefore I can feel nothing for him except hatred. *shrugs*

melkors story is quite tragic, highest of the Ainur reduced to a pitiless weakling on an underground throne, i pity him in that he may be weaker than some of his creations, every time someone turns evil is a tragedy and
they should be pitied

But who are we to judge good from evil..?
Who are we to feel good for the 'good' guys and pity the 'bad' ones? :pirate:
