When my fiance' proposed he said I was his Luthien, and then he hand calligraphied a copy of The Lay of Leithian and sent it to me ( we had a difficult seperation to to the military as well-just for us the boy was at home instead!)

When I found out the Tolkien wrote it about Edith, I am almost in tears when I think about it much less read it. It seems even better to me that those epic feelings were based in real people.

It is an absolutely fantastic story! It's really genuine, nothing can compare to their story. It's not a story that you get every day,it's really different, and not some sappy love story like some are...which i really dislike... but they really show us what true love is and yeh. Its awesome! :)

What really got me is that she put Morgorth, the insanely powerful Vala, to sleep just by singing. That part just really got me charged.

Ah - you're so unique in the fact that you're old enough for marriage. Most people of this forum (I think) are around the ages of 10 to 20, I suppose. But it's nice to have people not only from all around the world, but also, of all ages. :bye2:

For those who care, here's the grave of Professor Tolkien and his wife Edith. You can see the "Bern and Luthien" inscriptions: http://www.lordotrings.com/misc/grave.asp

Very touching.

If you mean the Mouth of Sauron on MEV's (formally ME-MW) boards, then yes I am.

That is very touching! Edith was Tolkiens Luthien and Tolkien was Ediths Beren. Thats really sweet!!!!!

Ya know I think they show those on one of the disks in the Appendices of RotK. I'm not quite sure though.

yes, it is very sad, and sweet, i reminded me of the odyssey when i first read it actually, like when he sais to calypso(how every you spell her name) that he would rather spend one moment alive in his wifes arms then live for ever and never hold her again.

That story's so beautiful, it really shows that Tolkien understands human nature. I don't know if anyone else has noticed, but most male writers don't tend to focus on romance too much in their stories. Tolkien's not one of them.

And yes, I also thought it was very sweet that Beren's name was engraved on Tolkien's grave and Luthien was engraved on Edith's :) .
