i think it depends. When i read it 1st time, Silmarillion was quite boring to me (I was 11 ). Now I'm 14. I read it second time and it explained me a lot of things from LOTR. Of course LOTR is still more interestin' but all fans of Tolkien and LOTR should read Sil - If you don't read it, you won't be a real fan!
no LOTR, no Silmarilion, but "The Hobbit" is still the best . Thorin and his friends rules

I think it takes an older mind to truly understand and appreciate Tolkien's works. He writes in a way that would be hard for young minds to comprehend. I myself am not that old (still in my early teens), but it took me a few years to fully understand The Lord of the Rings, and am still wrapping my head around The Silmarillion.

I ususally understand the books i read pretty quickly but with Sil even I had to read it through, put it aside for some time, think about everything said there, then picked out the characters that interested me the most, found their story in the book and then started re-reading it, a person at a time. But i feel that i never understood the characters until i started drawing them...

That's a good way of going at it, Daughter of Feanor.

It is hard to choose vause they both have something that makes one better than the other one. Anyway, I chose LotR because it was the book that got me excited of Tolkien's other books

I chose Lord of the Rings. The Silmarillion is very hard to read. Lord of the Rings is not that difficult and easier to understand. I haven't finished The Silmarillion, but I'm gonna try.

I love them both, but the Sil is much more deep and it isn't really a book that you can just sit and read idly if you really want to get the full effect. You need to be in a different mind set, kinda. They're both works of art though. ^_^

LOTR is better.
The Silmarillion is very good, many beautiful story's. But LOTR is a combination of beautiful story's, from the wars of men- to the life of a merely hobbit. From great songs and purity(lol)- to "action" parts and fear. Well I think you got the point .
I dont say that Sil dont have these things^, i just say that LOTR has everything in it

Yeah, that's true. I exactly know what you wanted to say, and I always have the same problem to express it with words . Well, every LOTR fan knows that, I guess

I love both works. They're so beautiful, but I think you can't really compare them, because the Silmarillion is a collection of stories and LotR is one big story. But I think I like the Silmarillion even more than LotR. I don't really know why

I amlost have the same opinion as Firiel. Even though the Silmarillion is not one story I do not think that it can be compared with LotR. It is just a masterpiece. A milestone in philology.

I like The Silmarillion more than LotR because of all the tales of the Elves and all in it, which were lacking in The Lord of the Rings. The stories of Finrod, Turgon, Fingolfin, and all the others were awesome in The SIlmarillion, and were just hinted at in The Lord of the Rings.
