Alot of you might be too young to remember a time where lotr wasnt a major motion picture, or in the making to be a major motion picture.
I know that a few of you had read the books before the movies and had loved it for a few years.
I find it strange, I remember having to search through at least 50 second hand book stores to find a copy of the hobbit, but since the movie was released, theres millions of copies everywhere. Even the unfinished tales are as easy as pie to find now.
I remember when lotr was mentioned, people went 'huh?' Gollum wasnt used as a derogatory word in general conversation and short people wern't described as 'hobbits'
Do you remember things from before the movies were released that have drastically changed now? (apart from your bedroom poster collection)
Well my dad was a Tolkien obsessive as well, and maybe because I'm in the UK, but he had already amassed a huge collection of Tolkien books, so LOTR was not unfamilar to me.
I do remember though, that you could not find so many LOTR things - you were lucky to find a calander of the artwork, whereas now the internet is bursting with merchandise for both books and films.
My overwhelming emotion when I heard about the films was "oh, great". s I knew my dad would be going into hyper mode, and that's not pretty. As he had tried to make me read LOTR lots of times, it made things even worse,as no doubt the whole "you must read them" would start again. That's how I missed watching FOTR i the cinema because my dad is the *nudge* "look at that!" *nudge* type. Annoying or what?

*can't help but laugh at JF*
My parents were both acting kind of like teenagers. They were both excited and nervous. I hadn't had all that much exposure to LotR before (though I grew up on the Hobbit) but then they got the whole family to watch a program on TV on the making of FotR, and I decided that I really wanted to watch the movies.

Agh, there is nothing more annoying that watching something and everytime something happens, Pokey next to you starts prodding and whispering. I too grew up with the Hobbit, although it was not voluntary on my part.

Where I come from there are people who still don't know what lotr is. I am an avid reader but my friends unfortunately are not. I remember when I was just going to my school when I saw this second hand book shop. I just saved my money for it and bought it. It was one of the best memories in my life. It was way before the movie come.
