the story of beren and luthien is the way romance should really be, instead of what pop culture and modern living presents to us (you know, lust and relationships based on purely physical grounds, no commitment, no faithfulness to each other etc.)

I totally agree with you vikingmaiden! A hundred years ago relationships were based on pure love and commitment, and now it's based solely on the physical attributes of a person...it really sickens me. I mean how many relationships that you know of are actually based on true love? :disgust:

I think both Beren&Luthien and Aragorn&Arwen are amazing stories...
The way Luthien gives everything for him is so moving, and the way Beren loves her, and fights for that love... is so great... jus perfect. Who wouldn't like to live a love like that one??

NO! I will not belive it. Romance is not dead. Look at yourself for instance. Look at what "you" people say. YOU EXIST PEOPLE! YOUR OPPINIONS MATTER!

As for me. I dont agree with you..romance is not dead. Although more dead than a thousand years ago...although what do we know. Have you travelled back in time and saw it? People dont change, even with a thousand years. In that time there was just no movies and internet, so the *ahem* thing, wasnt spread out. But how do we know, that romance in those times existed in only stories aswell..?

I agree with you Romendacil! I believe in love, passion, and romance, and I'd die for it, like Beren&Luthien. And as I still believe in it, it still exists... And if you also believe, that makes love bigger and greater. We can live our own love stories. There will be no Elf Kings nor beautiful inmortal Princess, but will be great aswell...

On the other hand... It's true that today many people don't believe in love... but there are also many other people you can fall in love with, so... don't worry... haha

I agree with you 100% there. Seriously , what has this world come to ??
It's quite sad actually, i don't mean to be offensive but it kinda sounds like human beings are corrupt in some aspects of life....but then i guess thats the way it is....

I totally agree!!! I wish it could stay how it was with Aragorn/Arwen and Luthien/Beren.

Anyway, Luthien and Beren is my very favorite story out of the Silmarillion!!! It is just sooooo beautiful and touching with what they both go through to be with one another.... And how Beren is willing to get a Simaril from Morgoth's crown so he is worthy in Thingol's eyes. And I also love it when Luthien goes after him and helps him by singing... its just such a wonderful story!!!

Well, it´s not exactly my fave part of Sil, but it´s deep and touching. If you need details, you can easily make them up in your mind ... I think that Lúthien was very brave when she danced in front of Morgoth (I would do that more than awfully ;)), and when she sang to Mandos ... Not to mention Beren - he was a real hero of old; tragic past, handsome, valiant.
A romance like theirs was should exist here. Right here, in this world, on this planet. Where we don´t even know what love is.

i love the fact that Tolkien has the name Beren on his grave in Oxford, and on his wife's grave is the name Luthien. That shows us again how much he loved his own creation.

And so sweet and romantic too... it probably was meant to show that he loved his wife as mush as Beren loved Luthien...

In fact, they share the same grave. It's one of the big headstones for two coffins or whatever, so he's buried with his wife. ^_^
