Ummmm. I hate to say it, but I think that even 100 years ago people were still marring for finacial benefits, and all that stuff. The girl and man would have almost no say in whoi they married. I could be wrong though.

Marriage for a long time has been political...
We go back before written word! Then... maybe in some places.
I personally can't go out with much less marry a utterly beautiful girl I find to have the personality of a door knob.
Back to Beren and Luthien... My second fav. story in the Sim. So romantic yet not bad romance, and not reminding me of Romeo and Juliet. (I can't stand Shakespeare)

Yeah its one of my favorite story's!
I loved it even when I first read it in LOTR- where it was wrote shortly as a song, It made sad (If i'm not wrong Aragorn told it to the Hobbits in the chapter "A knife in the dark").

Marriage was an unknown thing before the written word. Twelfth century troubadours were the first ones who thought of courtly love in the same way we do now. The whole notion of romance apparently didn't exist until medieval times.
On topic: I think the Beren and Luthien story is really heartbreaking!

^ Lol, yes, I'm a sucker for romance. I just LOVE the story of Beren and Luthien, though. It's just so... perfect. Definately one of my favorites in the Silmarillion.

The story of Romeo and Juliet that is thought to be one of the best love stories ever is just a simple story compared to the masterpiece that Prof. Tolkien created. I really like this story. It is just great.

Everybody should. Prof. Tolkien is the best weather he writes for battles, love stories or anything else. He was a genius people.
