I'm in the middle of reading the book of lost tales part one and so far it's a really great book. I'm only at the commentary for " the coming of the valar and the building of valinor" though. It's great because it shows alot of Tolkien's earliest writings and conceptions of Middle-earth. A lot of the names are different though and that makes it kinda confusing but Christopher Tolkien provides a great list showing what sum of those names turned out to be in the silmarillion so that kinda makes it less confusing. This book goes into way more detail than the silmarillion and that makes it very fascinating. I know i'm only sort of near the beginning of the book but it's already great and I can't wait to read more of it ![]() So has anyone else started reading it or has already read it here? ![]() ![]() |

I've read Part 1 and 2. Honestly, I like it more than the Silmarillion at parts. I particularily enjoyed the fact that Tolkien wrote it in an archaic fashion. It just gives it a more mythical feel about it. And Tevildo - you gotta love him ^_^ All in all a great read. Oh, "Why the Man in the Moon Came Down too Soon" is a great poem! |

Just a quick question- What exactly are the Lost Tales about [and the Unfinished Tales]? I'm assuming they are LotR related, but how? ![]() |

The Lost Tales are Tolkien's first writings on "Middle-Earth" (although not the fantasy realm which we know, rather our world), and what later came to us as the Silmarillion. It is quite similar at parts, and yet quite different in many others. It's written in an archaic fashion (so Old-English); and is rooted in the real world (one idea Tolkien had was that England was Tol Eressea, another was that Tol Eressea was an island west of England. Not to mention places such as: Rome (Rum), Troy(Trui), etc. are mentioned within the body of the text). The Lost Tales have more of a..."mythic" and "pagan" feel about them, in contrast to the Silmarillions very "Biblical" feel. The Unfinished Tales is just that-Unfinished tales concerning Middle-Earth. It has an elongated, yet unfinished, version of Tuor's coming to Gondolin; an elongated version of the Tale of Turin; information (and a map) of Numenore, including a list of kings and queens, and a tale of a particular king of Numenore; the Tale of Celeborn and Galadriel (which is unfinished and exists in a number of versions which contradict each other); and information regarding the Istari, the Rohirrim, and Palatiri ![]() |

I've read it and we even have it at my house. I've not picked it up in a few years, though, sad to say. I should when I get some time! |
