I'd recommend the Silmarillion... it's a bit exhausting to read, yes... but if you read a part a day, it's actually fascinating. It's like my bible...

Yeah, that is what my sister and brother told me... it's very indepth and can be a bit taxing on the brain. Some people I would suspect might have to read it thorugh a few times before everything clicks but from what I hear it's a very informative book so anyone wanting to know more about LOTR should read it. *shrugs*

It sheds a whole new light on middle Earth that you always had questions about. And you learn so much more about the history of everything. Totally worth it!

The Silmarillion is my favorite book. I don't normally read books more than once but I've read it 4 times. For me that's big.

Yes, I would, but only if you're COMPLETELY crazy about Middle Earth. It's a good book, but difficult to read. I wouldn't reccomend it to anyone with a weak stomach for slow or confusing books. WARNING: there is a REALLY boring part right in the middle, so beware.

I love that the vote is unanimously in favour of reading it :-D

It is quite slow and difficult in places, but if you completely adore middle earth you will devour it regardless.

I read a chapter or, if it was a longer chapter, a section a night. I think that's a good way to go about it because you're not bombarding your brain with names and places and events. You can just mull it over. Although I found myself needing to read some chapter synopses by the end of it because it took quite a while. I think I may try to reread it in a few months but over a shorter time span, because I have a feeling I'll get some different things out of it again if I read it that way.

It is definitely my favourite Tolkien work so far.

I had trouble reading it at first I just could not seem to get started. But then I flipped through and found the part about Sauron in his earliest days & it was so interesting I decided to go back to the beginning and try again and it just went so much better & was a great read. I cant imagine any fan of Middle Earth not enjoying it.

I've only read it twice, and took me a while both times. I did really like it.

In my opinion the Sil is absolutely worth to be read, even though it might take more time than an average book. If you have trouble memorizing a lot of names and relations, it is best to treat it like a history book: read only a few pages at once and maybe even make notes to help you memorize stuff (exactly how I did it the first time ;-) ). After finishing, you just know so much more background to LOTR, which is absolutely worth the read.

^Yeah, don't treat it like a regular book. It's lots of short stories, basically. You're not meant to read them all at once. But it's definitely worth it, cause the stories themselves are great, and you end up learning a lot more about Tolkien's universe, which will give a better understanding of books like LotR and The Hobbit too.

Lol 4 hours is a huge accomplishment in my mind! I could read for 4 hours and only have 100 pages read. :p.

Yes, I agree. I have actually been wanting to re-read it but just have not had the time.
