Post subject:  LOTR Allagorical? (school project for frodosco)
Hey everyone. This is frodosco from the chat. I'm doing a school project on lotr, Tolkien and WW2. I would like any help I can get. The project is based on accusations that Tolkien's books are based on WW2, which as you probably know he denied. I need to find out which side is right. I need information on Tolkien, WW2 battles, and anything else you may know about WW2. Btw, this can also give you an excuse to talk to me. :b So if anyone has any helpful advice, plz help.

i think there might be some thngs in common, but remember, sauron doesnt hate one race of people really....not like hitler with the jews, and think of the atomic bomb...i mean, where does that come in middle earth....also, this was all based on the rings of power, all about the one ring, all about frodo destroying the rings

Tolkien despised allegory. He claimed that there was no alllegory whatsoever in his stories. to quote on of his letters (from the front of my copy of the Sil.)

That is the start of the part on allegory. I am ot going to sit here and type it all out. Maybe you should search the net for a copy of the letter, or check your copy of the Silmarillion [assuming you have it].

He did have parts of WW2 in his book, but it isn't based of WW2. The dead marshes, where Frodo Sam and Gollum saw the floating people, came from WW2. In the trenches, when they would fill with water, the dead men would float. Its kinda sad.

Tolkien wrote in the intro to the lord of the rings that he did not ,mean any allegory and if tolkien said it then we should take his word on it. However, something like ww2 will have left its mark on Tolkien and maybe subconciouly he reffered back to his experience, completely unintentionally of course. But whatever u think mate, im alright with, this is just my opinion and I hope I have managed to answer ur question.Also the thing about A-Bombs, why did tolkien write in more than one ring if thats wot it represented? wouldnt he just use on?
