 Post subject: Níniel and Turin
PostPosted: September 19th, 2006, 4:49 pm

I just got done reading of Turin Trumbar today! It is (so far) my fav. story in the whole book! I loved Nienor a.k.a Níniel and her brother Turin!! Turin rocks....he was so great

But I thought it weird that, after Glaurung, like...hmm..did something to Nienor, how she forgot everything, that then, she did not remember Turin was her brother and they got married!! and they are brother and sister!! Very, very weird.

But I felt sorry for Níniel , when she laid on the grave of Findulias, and it was storming, and then Turin found her.

Great story....:D

I found the tale rather sad actually. It was very interesting to read, but it was very much a tragedy. there were very few rays of happiness. Even the wedding, which is supposed to be a joyous occasionis only a sickly ironic one because we know that she is Turin's sister, but he doesn't. And they both end up dead in the end. Just sad. :(

^It was sad. A beautiful story it was. Kind of weird but beautiful nonetheless.

I just finished the Sil last week! It was my first time reading it. I loved it needless to say.
I think that the tale of Beren and Luthien was my favorite. It was tragic, but beautifully tragic. Turin Turambar was more grotesquely tragic. Not to say it's a bad story. It just doesn't have the same.......... purity that Beren and Luthien does. I feel like I can't really enjoy the love story because I know it's so wring sonce they're brother and sister. With Beren and Luthien, it was pure and ........... lovely love. I guess I'm just a sucker for good love stories. :P

 I'm glad I'm not the only one.
I think I will have to read over the Beren and Luthien part (although it was pretty long) and compare it to Aragorn and Arwen's tale. I want to look for all the parallels.
Of course, I plan on reading the whole book again. I did adore it. Nienor and Turin was a very good story. It reminded me a bit of King Arthur to be honest. Classis tale of chivalry. Tragic ending. Still a very goos read.

Maeglin? I thought Maeglin was awesome up until the point that he betrayed Gondolin. That really annoyed me. An elf betraying his own kind. Ugh.

The story of Turin and Nienor is cool, but I find it depressing, and enjoy the story of Tuor much better. Tuor is my second-favorite human from The Silmarillion. But, I like the tale of Beren and Luthien the best. It's so tragic, and Beren dies, besides of which, Tolkien's poems in that one are the best out of the entire book.

^Hooray! Another person who likes Beren and Luthien. :)

Maeglin..... I didn't like. I feel bad for him because he is in love with someone who he can't have (his cousin Idril I believe), but at the same time I have to hold him responsible for his own actions. he could hae dealt with his feelings in a better way.
It's kind of funny that all these Tokien stories involve incest. Just kidding. :P
I do like Tuor by the way. He's pretty awesome.
I like Nienor's name. Nienor Niniel. It's so pretty sounding.
After that train of nearly unrelated thoughts, I'm sure you're all happy to hear that this post is finished.

Aredhel was pretty awesome. I was so mad that Eol forced her into marrying him. Glad she escaped to Gondolin though. (It was Gondolin, correct?)
The people who were really bad were Feanor and his sons. Feanor started all the trouble. The first killing of Elf by Elf. The first blood shed in Valinor. And his sons were no better. Maedhros was alright for awhile, but they couldn't just let the Silmarils be. They had to have them for their own. Greed. It's a destroyer.

I really loovve the story of Turin, it's actually my fav story in the book even though it's sooo sad. But it's a very beautiful story I think.. kinda.. sad and beautiful. I also liked the story of Beren and Luthien of course. It was actually my favourite when I first read the Sil..
I did like Maeglin before he fell in love with Idril and betrayed Gondoli, because he helped his mother to escape from Eol, but afterwards he became too proud and arrogant.

That had to be so terrible. To go through all of that, and find out that the girl you loved was your sister. The girl you married was your sister. The girl who was going to have your child was you sister. No wonder Turion went crazy and killed himself. His sword...... what was the name of it? It was special somehow. Ah. He killed his friend with it accidentally. It was his friend's sword. Something like that. And then he askmed the sword to slay him quickly, and the sword agreed. Nienor's death was tragic too. Throwing herself into the river in her despair. That's so sad.

His sword name was Glarung or something..he re-named it

and yes...when he killed Beleg, thinking him as a foe..I felt sorry for beleg, who was Turin's good friend, and I felt sorry for Turin as well..cuz after that, he realized what he had done, and killed Beleg.

No......... wait. I thought Glaurung was the dragon who Turin slew. The same dragon who put the enchantment on Nienor.
His sword was..... Gurthang maybe? Something.
Beleg! that was the name of his friend. I was so sad when he died! I really liked him a lot. He was a great character. Of course, I felt bad for Turin as well. The knowledge that you had just killed your friend would drive you mad I think. That was terrible.
