My mother bought me The Return of the King (the novel) about a year and a half ago and I was saving to read it after getting the other Tolkien books first, then I moved away from California and I accidentally left it in a drawer along with the prom book my mom made me a few years ago. :(

I guess it's been 13 months now and I've just forgotten about it, but I felt really bad. I've seen all of the LotR movies 5 times each, which is a lot for me (none of the extended ones yet). I'm not really into novels, but I want to give LotR a try, because I already know I love it so much. I hope I get a job soon so I can buy 'em.

Just wanted to confess! :)

Aw, that's really too bad, Feveth, but know that you're in the company of many ringers who haven't read the books...yet. I've read them many times, but I know that those who haven't can still be VERY loyal LotR fans. So, don't feel ashamed or anything. :D
An idea: Instead of buying them for now, you could go to your local library and check them out. I've not been to a single library that didn't have Tolkien. And start with the Hobbit. If you're not into novels, The Hobbit is much shorter and will be easier to get into. :)

I was gonna say, go check at your local library.. and if you're worried about not finishing it in time before it's due back you can always borrow it again!

Don't feel bad for not reading the books, you're missing out on something wonderful, but don't feel bad since there are SO many LotR fans out there who are just fans of the movies, and hey there's nothing wrong with that.

I myself grew up on LotR, or more like with LotR always around me since both my parents and my sister read the books all the time and always told me stories from it! My mom used to read the Hobbit as a bedtime story for me when I was little. :)

You're so lucky! Not one single member of my family has read LotR. Come to think of it none of my friends have read it either. My cousin is the only person that I know that has read the books. Unbelievable...see I need you guys at this forum!!! No one else I know wants to hear about LotR :'(

Anways, I hope that you get around to reading The Hobbit/The Lord of The Rings and maybe even The Silmarillion some day soon. Trust me, once you start you'll be hooked :)

I'm so sorry about you... I read the Silmarillion an year ago, then Unfinished Tales, then the Hobbit, then LOTR and finally all the 13 books History of Middle-Earth... The movies I've watched more than 200 times each and I've the extended editions but after all you should read the books... they're so amazing. I think you're missing a lot...

Oww come on, is not so bad... I think you should begin with The Hobbit, it's a very nice book, I love reading it... I'm saying that because I began with the Silmarillion which is my fav but it's quite difficult to understand it at first, so that's why The Hobbit is the best way to start your reading... :yes:

Well, actually the Silmarillion comes first in Time, but that's for more advanced Tolkien fans...

The Hobbit comes first, it tells how Bilbo came to get the Ring... then comes LotR, which is actually one book, but the publishers made Tolkien split it up into 3. So, there's The Fellowship of the Ring, then The Two Towers, and lastly The Return of the King, just like how the movies are. :)

I'd say after you're fairly familiar with Middle Earth, then you should read The Silmarillion, and after that, the sky's the limit with all the many smaller works by Tolkien about Middle Earth. :)

you're not the only one... my .... humans? scowl each time i mention sindarin or anything Tolkien-related. i they weren't my family, i'd cut their necks!!!!! and i mean it :bones:

I have to admit - I wasn't an LotR fan until after the movies. I read the books in the sixth grade - but they were too tough, too long for me. But now I've just finished rereading them, and they are terrific. Some parts are better than in the movies, although the movies, of course, provide more depth in the battle scenes. You should read them - maybe you'll like them, maybe you won't , but it's worth the try. Some very important things are in the books that the movies neglected to mention, so it would be good to read up on it all. :bye2:

Oh yes, of course we're glad to have you here with us, Beriadanwen - because none of my family likes LotR (my parents haven't heard of it). We need you at the forum too, because you're always the one that provides us with all the important information on everything!! :bye2:

I, like everyone else suggests that you check out the library.

And when you do get your hands on them, I suggest you take it slow, and don't get discouraged... they can be difficult to get through the first time. If you're stuck on a slow part and you have no idea whats going on, sometimes its better to skim through it, and then the second time you read you'll have a much better idea of what's happening, and you'll understand what the heck they're talking about :)

Oh, yes, skipping entire chapters because you are convinced that the author is just waffling on about nothing can help. It means you get to the end without becoming unduely frustrated, and you can be pleasantly surprised when you come back to read it later. I'm sure the best of us do that. :)

Buy it if you think you'll be slow reading it. I didn't read the Hobbit for years because my friend wanted her copy back and I never got around to borrowing it again (then I was given it for christmas, and felt under an obligation to read it.)
