I've noticed something in many RPs lately.. everyone seems to assume that every tree an Elf passes contains a talan.

I'm not sure if I'm making much sense here, but telain are pretty much a Lothlórien trademark, like the mellyrn are. I see people RPing in places like Mirkwood, Rivendell.. and according to those RPers, all those places also contain mellyrn and telain.

Okay, I'll give them the telain, since anyone is free to build them anywhere they wish to (though they were mostly used by Lórien's border guards for concealment...), but a mallorn in Mirkwood?!?!

It's a Galadhrim thing... :confused2:

I agree, unless the Galaadhrim lived elsewhere

But the Galadhrim are Silvan Elves of Lórien... if they lived elsewhere, they wouldn't be the Galadhrim

yeah, I don't believe Mellyrn grow in any other elven places in Middle-Earth than in Lorien. And I also believe that the Galadhrim only live in Lothlorien

I'm in full support of you there Haldir. Telain are (I believe) almost exclusive to Lorien.

[And as a point, you may wish to edit your post; 'mellyn' is plural of 'mellon', the word for friend, not the plural for mallorn ;) ]

Exactly, right? So it seems strange when people start using Telain in RPs in places like... Rivendell.

Ah, that would be my mistake... I forgot the "r" in "mellyrn".

...Well, the colour-changing-eyes thing is actually feasible, because I've known a few people whose eyes actually do change colour.

But anyways, yeah, it gets annoying when there are telain in Mirkwood and Rivendell, etc. People seem to just pick and choose about just what they want to keep from the LotR Canon, saying that some stuff isn't important to keep to and other stuff is. It's really frustrating.

Ah. Well then, that's different, true. Yeah, that gets on my nerves. :P

I'm sure some elves have color changing eyes. One of the characters in one of my fanfics dose, but they change from Green to Blue.

I am totally sympathizing here...I get SO frustrated when people misrepresent an elf, or modernize characters, or do things un-lotr-ish! I am so glad I am not alone.

And in all I've read, none of the first-mentioned things are in any other place but Lorien.

I think there were arguably some flets in Mirkwood, as it was said of Thranduil's folk: 'In fact the subjects of the king mostly lived and hunted in the open woods, and had houses or huts on the ground and in the branches.' The Hobbit
