I have to agree that all authors are influenced in some way or other. No matter who they are.
Rowling may have been influenced by Tolkien (and actually many other things as well) but she did not copy from him... The same goes for Tolkien.
I do have to admit that their series are similar in some ways, but as Evenstar said... Not to a great extent.
So, no, I do not think Rowling copied from Tolkien.

I don't think she copied from JKR either. she was just influenced by his work and that can't be classified as copying.

I think that JKR put alot of thought into HP- because i have read studies of hers that shes done and i think when she went to look up everything she wanted to put in her story not only did she read factual stuff but many other fiction books as well- i mean, why write something when you have no idea what your doing or if any other authors done it? and then in the process of trying to write the books she was just "oh, i think i have an idea and tolkien did.. yeah that was bloody brilliant!" and stuff. But lol i think about stuff like this alot- ... hehe i get bored much

It's possible that the ideas that similar to Tolkien, she just randomly thought of and later remembered that Tolkien had something quite similar.

J.R.R Tolkien has a whole history behind his characters, and JKR has her own. They may both have similar factors, but you can't be sure if they were copied. The giant spiders were a vital part in lotr, but I think JKR put the spiders into the story because of Ron's arachnophobia. Black hooded creatures are usually thought as evil, and can always be antagonists.

Personally, I like LotR movies much better than HP, which I've heard criticism circulating about how tall the actors and actress are. Someone mentioned that J.K.Rowling took Tolkien's Mirror of Galadriel and was inspired to create the mirror in the first Harry Potter book when Harry Potter looked into the mirror and saw his family. That idea was derived from Tolkien's Mirror of Galadriel. But this is what I was told, and so I'm not insisting on anything.
LotR seems, however, to be more developed. It has so many different peoples and places, and even the languages are written out. It is very rich of background. Harry Potter is alright, but I pay more attention to Lord of the Rings, not that I'm necessarily choosing sides.

Thank you, Larael Greenleaf! It's all my opinion, though.

Movies really don't do any books justice.

Yes, that's true. *thinks about how Famarir and Eowyn were basically neglected in RotK.* Oh well. I guess we can't expect that much if we know that "movies really don't do any books justice".

Plagiarism!!!
Nah, I'm just kidding There are some strange similarities like the Nazgul/Dementors, the Spiders of Mirkwood/Spiders in HP but meh everyone is influenced by something. Nothing is original nowadays. They're both great stories and that's the bottom line
