Ah but J.K Rowling didn't make up the Philosopher's stone - it's been a legend for hundreds of years so if we're going with that line of thought then they both copied but at least J.K Rowling admitted it by calling it the same thing

I don't believe JK hasn't read LOTR because take a look of the keepers of Azkaban... I think that's taken from the Nazgul and also the unknown evil is an element used in both LOTR and HP. You just have to think about it... I was a huge fan of HP before knowing LOTR so I can say that for real...

^ she has read LotR, it says it was one of her favourite books at university in her biography.

All authors are influenced by other authors anyway. Tolkien was influenced by Scandinavian myths and legends.

Though I don't understand the fuss about J.K Rowling copying. There are many other fantasy writers who's books are far more similar to LotR esspecially the ones who have epic quests such as Eragon, Shannara, The Wheel of Time etc.

hehe that kinda reminds me on the first chemistry lesson we had - everything i remeber is Al - kimia or something in this way in Arabian means the Philosopher's Stone (Alchemy is old chemistry)


i read HBP three times till now and it's awesome! really truly awesome. i was so sad when i had to lend it to my friend - next day i walked over to her and annyoed that much that she gave in and returned the book. yeah, good old Annoying Elf

Remeber, Tolkien created his world over the couse of most of his life, JKR has only been developing her world for the past 15 years or so. Also, you can't expect every author to come up with entirely different language. What you say is true- LotR is more developed.

I've seen a lot of name comparisons on here, and I have erad in several interviews that JKR has always "collected" unusual names. So, for example, she may have read "Longbottom" in LotR, and remembered it while she was writing Neville's character and felt that the name fit him (which I agree with her).

In defense of Dumbledore's name, a "dumbledore" is an old English word for a bumblebee. JKR has said that she always imagined Dumbledore walking the corridors of Hogwarts humming to himself, like a bumblebee. So if you must accuse someone of "copying," accuse Tolkien as well as Rowling for "copying" old English lore.

The same goes for many elements in the books, especially in Harry Potter-- lots of things are taken (and slightly modified) from mythology/legends/etc from around the world, most of them from Britain.

I have read from my english book that J.K. Rowling haven't even read The Lord of the Rings. As someone said earlier. And Tolkie.... I have heard that exsample Tolkien and C.S. Lewis read their texts so Tolkien might have something in his texts that Lewis had in his texts.... Or something like that.

But I can't say that Potter would be as good as LOTR.

J.K Rowling took "Dumbldore" (sorry if someone else already said this) from Bilbo's poem. they're were "dumbldores" in it, and then, majically, J.K Rowling came up with the same thing. conquincidence? i THINK NOT!!! (lol)

I think it might have been Does anyone feel like posting that poem cause I don't remember it. But as Jenny said J. K. Rowling didn't come up with the word Dumbledore, she got it from the old English word for bumblebee. I suppose Tolkien did the same.

I always find it strange in this discussion when people take a few tiny similarites between the two books and use this as a basis for calling J.K Rowling unimaginitive and a copy cat despite the hugh inventivness throughout her books most of which has nothing to do with Tolkien or any other author for that matter.

Yeah I noticed that the as soon as I read it. I paused for a second...then kept reading. There was another similarity that I came across but I've forgotten it
