I am absolutley in Love with The Lord of the Rings and I have been ever since the release of the Second Movie, but as it stands at the moment, as much as I'd love to get down to reading all of the books, when they all appear next to one another it looks quite a tedious read...

I was in a phase wherein I would pick up a book, read approximatley half of it and never pick it up again. Obviously I don't do that anymore and I am ashamed to say I did this to The Hobbit and also The Fellowship of the Ring :( ( FOTR didn't quite reach the halfway mark even). I will get down to it one day but did/do any of you guys feel that you have or are experiencing this at the moment or in the past?

When I first started reading FOTR, I really had to dedicate myself to push on before the Hobbits met Aragorn at Bree. I remember thinking, "Why did Tolkien have to make his chapters so long?!" :blush: :P But I'm soooo glad I made it that first time, because they are amazingness! :D

....the three books took me three days to finish, considering the fact that I still had other stuff to do. For me, with my wpm speed, even a 1008-page book isn't that daunting considering how quickly I can finish it.

Wow ! That's fast reading ! :-D
It takes me longer because I like to pace myself to take in lots of the littel bits of information and to take in and throughly enjoy what it is I'm reading. With so much work to do and so many History books to read it's hard to find time to fit in leisure reading, especially seeing as i'm halfway through a book called 'Peter and the Starcatchers' with a couple of hundred more pages to read before moving onto the 'Prisoner of Azkaban' and 'Northern Lights' all of which must be returned to my local library in a few months. It isn't fair ! :)

Lol, FG. From the time I was six until the time I was twelve or so, just about all I did in my spare time was reading, so my wpm speed is rather high, but I still get a lot of enjoyment out of the books I read. If reading a book goes slowly for me, generally I don't end up enjoying it.

But I know what you mean by not much time for leisure reading. Still, it's the weekend, so I'll manage. :D I read a 482-page book this afternoon, and then realized that I don't have any more to read (any new ones, that is) until Monday. :annoyed2: Since, of course, whenever you get enough time to read books, you run out of them.

Ha ! I can't quite decide whether or not i'm enjoying it lol. I don't seem to want to pick it up every five sconds like ...
Plus I have about a million books to read for history :s

Back on topic...Yeah I'd love to be able to read extremelly fast but I can't at the minute. I can read much faster than I used to be able to if it's a book i'm enjoying (:

Yeah, it came out last year and it's called Peter and the Shadow Thieves. Freaky book, loved it. That's interesting though, because Starcatchers really drew me in and I think I finished it in like 2 days... :confused: To each their own though. :)

Whenever I start reading them, I usually go into another book for a little while.

The first time especially it really seemed like a tedious read, but I wanted to read it so badly that I didn't really notice.

I chose the third option, because, as a devoted fan, I certainly don't think that. But others might, others with impatience, shallowness maybe, or a fear of deep meaning and morals, might look at the whole thing and say, "Noooooo..."

When I read LotR for the first time, I found the beginning very long. But now, I just love it, because it gives you so much detailed information that you need and that is also just awesome to have about the whole story.

Not at all. Longer books means longer time reading and spending time with the characters.

When i was reading LOTR for the first time, i was 12 or 13; Then I thought The Return of the King very tedious and found myself evilly skipping over paragraphs. Now that i'm older i wish the books were even longer...

The first time I read LotR, it was merely by not wanting to miss anything that I didn't speed-read through FotR, but by the end of that, I was completely absorbed in the story, which is what happens every time. By the time I reach TTT, I'm completely submerged in it again.

And by the end of RotK, I wish for more to read.

Well... The Lord of the Rings had not seemed to be a tedious read as I had been reading through the books for the first time. Though I have to say that now that I have read them all, the books do seem to be tedious and I have not been able to read through them more than once. However that is not to say that I did not enjoy them the first time around because I did.

To answer the poll... I would not say that the books seemed to be a tedious read by the mere size of them. I have read shorter stories that seemed so tedious not because of the size but because of the content, so I try not to judge how tedious it will be by just the size. :P

Maybe if the LotR looks tedious, or even if the Hobbit looks daunting, maybe you could listen to it on tape? Some people can get through a book when it is read to them.

My boyfriend doesn't really care for reading, but he'll love it when I read a book to him (it sounds childish, but people of all ages like to hear a story, not just read it). That's how we read the Chronicles of Narnia.

I read through the LotR, but listened to it on tape for the second time, and it was really cool!
