I don't know how many people here are interested in costuming, but in order to get experience for a movie costume, I decided to make a gown for a character from a book! That way I have much more freedom, and I don't have to hide from princess seams. :P
I'm just curious...has anyone else tried costuming yet? I think there's a few on here who frequent alleycatscratch...

I just started a topic about that in LOTR misc. I love making costumes! I usually don't start from scratch though, I alter clothes from the thrift store. It works: Brown turtleneck-neck+slashed down the middle+an extra foot of fabric around bottom of it= Frodo's coat!

haha, that's great. I love how people make costumes from thrift store purchases! I like to look for sheets and things at goodwill for fabric...

I'm making a Faramir cloak from an old fitted sheet of mine. My other Faramir cloak is just fine except for the small problem that since it's main use is for Frodo's pre-Lorien cloak, it only comes down to my knees, and it fastens at my shoulder.

I think making up one's costume based on what they think it looks like based on their reading of the books is awesome. I have seen some amazing LARP costumes that look nothing like the PJ fanfic that really bring Middle Earth to life! Using what one has available to make these outfits is such a cool thing! Imagination and resourcefulness! It Wins!

I agree. It's somehow more creative and the costume ends up being totally unique.

I like making up 'fantasy' costuming as I find too many nit pickers try and take the fun out of historical costuming.

It was a search for an 'Arwen' that put this site before me. I will likely buy something and I will modify it. I do love her coronation gown! Hope to wear it to a local medieval fantasy fair.

I would like to make a ranger costume or maybe something like Faramir's too.

I like my Boromir costume pretty well. It was done over a span of 2 to 3 years to save up and buy the different things. The shield I bought on ebay and customized it to look more like Boromir's by painting it and adding a different boss in the center. The boss is actually a hub for a semi wheel. I walked into a truck stop one day and it was on a rack with others. So I grabbed it and went to pay for it and the lady looked at it and said "We have been trying to get rid of these for months and no one was buying". She looked at me and smiled and told me to just take it so I got it for free. I would like to change the gold ring for something better in the future but for now it works. The sword I also got on ebay, I was really pleased because it came with a scabbard. I bought the materials for the hood and cape and my sister Bri sowed it together since she is a lot better at it than me lol. I bought the shirt as well on ebay. The surcoat was a Neo costume I found on ebay and my sister cut the sleeves of and added the trim. The belt I found on amazon. All I am waiting for now is my Boromir vambraces to arrive and I will be pretty much set. Here is the Sarn Ford Camp video to check it out. I know it's not great but I'm happy with it for all the work we put into it. Though I may be looking at a surcoat to buy that looks a lot like his.

Yeah we are in the process of setting up another one! We got some ideas for this time to help enhance the pictures and site that we are pretty excited about! Sadly the creek looks like it's going to be dry again this year but I guess we can cope.

Yeah and so far the creek is running, if it continues to run for 2-3 more weeks we should be good to go.
