It says after the battle where Melkor was taken captive that they brought him bck to "Valinor bound hand and foot and "he was brought to the ring of doom. There he lay upon his face before the feet of Manwe and sued for pardon"
What is the "Ring of Doom?"
It never mentioned it before then and I am not sure what it is talking about. anyone out there help me out?

From the description, it sounds like a place for the accused to stand in a courtroom.

Here is a quote from www.tolkiengateway.net
I'm not familiar with the site so I can't verify the entry, but here it is:
"Máhanaxar, derived from Valarin Mâchananaškad, was the Ring of Doom outside the golden western gates of the city of the Valar. Here the Powers gathered to hold their great councils, bathed in the light of the Two Trees while those Trees still stood, and here some of the most momentous decisions of Eä's history were made."

Thnx.
Now that I read on in the Silmarilion I am pretty sure that the Ring of doom was just like a meeting place/court of law type thing etc...
lol Thanks for the quote.

Yeah--they do mention it a number of times in The Silmarillion. It is a place of counsel and judgement.

Yes, I believe that is what it is. Either that it it is some kind of torture chamber. Something around those lines.

"In that time the Valar were gathered together to hear the song of Yavanna, and they sat silent upon their thrones of council in the Mahanaxar; the Ring of Doom near to the gates of Valmar; and Yavanna Kementari sang before them and they watched." -Silmarillion pg. 31. This describes how the Two Trees were born. The Ring of Doom was a place of council outside their main city, Valmar. This is where the Two Trees grew as well. The text is vague, but I assume that it surrounded a mound outside the western gate of Valmar called Ezellohar or Corollaire (Silmarillion 31). Hope that helps

Fair enough, I stand corrected. I plan to reread the Silmarillion soon, so hopefully that will refresh thy old memory.

Its good to re-read the Silmarillion, as its a difficult read. There's so much information to take in that its hard to remember or even understand everything. I found the second time around was much easier and more enjoyable.

Yes, I found it difficult to read the first few pages, but after I got "used" to the way the book was written, I was swept into the beauty and magic of it all. It was so easy to understand IMO after I got swept into the story. However, I defiantly have not been able to remember much from my last read, especially the details. I need to pick it up again. It was so amazing the last time I read it

Why would it be called a ring of "doom" though??

That kinda stumped me as well. My thoughts are that it is where the Valar took council with each other to decide the fate, or "doom", of people/places in Arda. So there they decided it was Morgoth's doom to be banished in the void for three ages after the first time he was captured, soon after the awakening of the Elves, etc.
