I highly recommend this book! It is quite the tragic tale of the 1st Age, but is a fascinating read. The core material was published in The Silmarillion in the Turin chapter, and again in Unfinished Tales in the Narn I Hîn Húrin chapter. But Christopher Tolkien gave it an honest attempt to complete it by tying some things together. It can be a bit of a tough read at times, but well worth pushing through the grinding parts.

It is the book I would like to make required reading for all of those critics whose comments have basically been snorts of derision, or more harshly said emotional diarrhea without the slightest explanation of how they arrived at their views. Of course most, or probably all of the (from what I’ve read) pathetic snobs of the 1950s have passed away by now. But there are more than enough around who spewed diarrhea. The whole bits about “Morgoth’s doom” or “Glaurung’s spells” is the weakest parts of the tale, but Túrin’s dogged “ability” to pretty much make a wrong choice every time, and the consequences that derive from the choices, are simply harrowing. And the most touching, if heart-rending scene in all of JRRT’s works for me is when Húrin and Morwen at last meet again at Túrin’s grave, and she dies in his arms. You have a heart of stone as far as I am concerned if that scene does not move you.
