Wow! I wouldn't have expected that either. Most people read LotR and sometimes never get around to reading the Hobbit. All I can say is wow....oh but it really deserved it!

ok so i'm in Australia actually.... and in my "host school" they had a sort of contest... we had to vote for our favorite book and here the amazing result... 3. Lord of the Rings... (only third !!!!!) 2. Harry Potter and the Halfblood Prince... (understandable... it's the new one so...) and.... number one is... The Hobbit ! yes.... i was very surprised when i saw this.... i mean, i thought the Lord of the Rings would be first... it wasn't, right ! but i really didn't think The Hobbit could be first... What do you think about that ? i don't say The Hobbit didn't deserve it... but it's very surprising.... |

I guess it would depend on the age group of those voting. If you were looking at a whole-school vote, you might have younger students who hadn't read LOTR yet, but had read the Hobbit, or people who weren't big readers who had read the Hobbit when they were younger but never gotten around reading LOTR. In terms of language, the Hobbit is easier to read, so chances are more people have read it. And because a lot of people read it before LOTR, chances are that it's their favourite because it occupies that special place of being the "first"... So while I personally think LOTR is better, if you are looking at people still at school, I suppose it's not really surprising. (Where about's in Australia are you? I know of two PLCs off the top of my head... Just curious  )

So I don't understand; you voted for you favorite book out of any book in the world...?? I'm not really surprised that The Hobbit beat out LotR because I know a lot of Tolkien fans that love The Hobbit over the rest of the books. What I'm surprised about is that LotR, the Hobbit and HP and the Half-Blood Prince were the top three. At my school I don't think they would have been that high...but I dunno...I might be surprised. I would have voted for....hmmm....I don't know. I hate choosing favorites because 10 seconds later I always change my mind. The Sil was my favorite. But then at one point LotR was my favorite...but I really love the Hobbit and I think that it might be my favorite. I love them all!
