Hey folks, I’ve been stuck on this for a while and really hoping someone here can help. I’m designing a motorized camera slider and can’t decide if I actually need a feedback linear actuator for this. I’ve read about position control and repeatability, but then I think, do I even need all that precision for a slider? It’s not like I’m running a CNC machine here. Has anyone built something similar and had to make this choice? |

I’ve gone through that same decision process while building an adjustable monitor lift for a multi-desk setup in our office. It depends a lot on how much control you need. If you're just moving the slider from point A to B without needing it to remember its position or adjust mid-run, then a non-feedback actuator would probably do the trick. But if you want to automate precise start/stop points or integrate it with an Arduino or similar for repeatable shots, feedback becomes important. In my case, I went with a feedback actuator because I needed it to remember its last position after the system rebooted. It was worth it. They clearly list which actuators include feedback and what type (potentiometer, hall effect, etc.), so it helped me match one to my controller. If you’re working with a camera slider that needs timing and position memory for video shots, I’d lean toward feedback. But if you're doing manual starts/stops, then save your budget. |

That’s a really solid breakdown. I ran into the same thing when setting up a simple linear movement for a pet feeder lid (fun weekend project lol). No feedback used — and it’s still going strong. |
