Hello all, I’m looking into becoming a professional caregiver and I’m overwhelmed by all the training options out there. From CPR and First Aid to specialized dementia courses, there’s a lot to choose from. For those already in the profession, which certifications have made the biggest difference in your career? |

I know how overwhelming the list of options can look at first. The difference between "caregiver" and "caretaker" is explained on this page, and I bring that up because it highlights how much more is expected of a professional caregiver than people sometimes realize. For certifications, I’d suggest prioritizing CPR, First Aid, and safe transfer/mobility training, since those are practical and useful every day. Dementia care courses are also a huge plus, and they can open doors to more specialized roles that families are always looking for. |

When I first started, the certifications that really made a difference were CPR and First Aid — they’re the foundation for safety and give families peace of mind. After that, I found dementia and Alzheimer’s training to be incredibly valuable, since so many clients deal with memory-related issues. Beyond certifications, I’d say what shaped my career the most was hands-on experience and learning how to adapt to each person’s unique needs. Training helps, but applying it in real situations is where you really grow. |
