Post subject: | Words of Wisdom from Middle Earth |
I was busy reading TTT last night when the inspiration for this thread hit me. ![]() The Lord of the Rings is filled to the brim with awesome quotes, and many of them have amazing truth and wisdom. I thought it might be fun, and good, to try and come up with a whole slew of "inspirational Middle Earthian anecdotes". ![]() ![]() Oh, and one more thing... I put this into the Book discussion... and my reason is this: We're all pretty darned familliar with the movie and all it's quotes. So, to make this a little bit more challenging, we're only going to do quotes from the books. This DOES include The Hobbit, The Silmarillion, ect. ![]() I'll start us off with a couple of examples... ------------------------------------ "Good and ill have not changed since yesteryear; nor are they one thing among Elves and Dwarves and another among Men. It is a man's part to descern them, as much in the Golden Wood as in his own house." ~Aragorn TTT, Book I, Chapter 2 "...dispair is only for those who see the end beyond all doubt. We do not." ~Gandalf FotR, Book II, Chapter 1 "Do we walk in legends or on the green earth in the daylight?" "A man may do both. For not we, but those who come after will make the legends of our time." ~ Rider to Aragon Book III, Chapter 2 "... I am wise enough to know that there are some perils from which a man must flee..." ~ Faramir Book IV, Chapter 5 "I do not fortell, for all fortelling is now vain: on the one hand lies darkness, and on the other only hope." -Galadriel, FotR, page 367 "...but I would not have come, had I known the danger of light and joy. Now I have taken my worst wound in theis parting, een if I were to go this night straight to the Dark Lord. Alas for Gimli son of Gloin!" "Nay!" said Legolas. "Alas for us all! And for all those that walk the world in these after-days. For such is the way of it: to find and lose, as it seems to those whose boat is on the running stream. But I count you blessed, Gimli son of Gloin, for your loss you suffer of your own free will, and you might have chosen otherwise. But you have not forsaken your companions, and the least reward that you shall have is that the memory of Lothlorien shall remain ever clear and unstained in your heart, and shall neither fade nor grow stale." "Maybe," said Gimli; "and I thank your for your words. True words doubtless; yet all such comfort is cold. Memory is not wha the heart desires. That is only a mirror, be it clear as Kheled-zaram." -Gimli and Legolas, FotR, page 369 "War must be, while we defend our lives against a destroyer who would devour all; but I do not love the bright sord for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend..." -Faramir, TTT, 656 Though here at journey's end I lie in darkness buried deep, beyond all twoes strong and high, beyond all mountains steep, above all shadows rides the Sun and Stars for ever dwell: I will not say the Day is done, nor bid the Stars farewell. -Sam, RotK, 889 "All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost..." (Gandalf; FotR 230) "Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement. For even the very wise cannot see all ends." (Gandalf; FotR, The Shadow of the Past) "The world is all about you: you can fence yourself in, but you can not forever fence it out." -Gildor [Fellowship of the Ring] "Faithless is he who turns when the road darkens." -Gimli (Fellowship of the Ring) (Frodo: "I wish it need not have happened in my time.") "So do I, and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us." (Gandalf; FotR, "The Shadow of the Past") "Death is a journey, a path that we all must take" Gandalf ROTK "Men of Rohan do not lie, and so are not easily deceived." Eomer to Aragorn in TTT "Do not vow to walk in the dark, who has not seen the nightfall." |

GREAT idea, Arsa! ![]() "Do we walk in legends or on the green earth in the daylight?" "A man may do both. For not we, but those who come after will make the legends of our time." ~ Rider to Aragon Book III, Chapter 2 "... I am wise enough to know that there are some perils from which a man must flee..." ~ Faramir Book IV, Chapter 5 I'll think of more later, when I'm not meant to be studying... |

Wonderful idea, Arr! I've been studying LotR for school this year, so I have a lot of things underlined and scribbled over in my book... *leafs through* Here's a quote of Galadriel's that is mostly relavent to the events in Tolkien, but I think it could be applied to our world, too. "I do not fortell, for all fortelling is now vain: on the one hand lies darkness, and on the other only hope." -Galadriel, FotR, page 367 And here is something that I think we've all experienced, but likely not been able to put into words: "...but I would not have come, had I known the danger of light and joy. -Sam, RotK, 889 |

I live by this quote, "All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost..." (Gandalf; FotR 230) It's full of wisdom that one is, and like I said, I live by it. |

"Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement. For even the very wise cannot see all ends." (Gandalf; FotR, The Shadow of the Past) This one made me think. |

Surprised no one has posted this one yet: (Frodo: "I wish it need not have happened in my time.") "So do I, and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us." (Gandalf; FotR, "The Shadow of the Past") I love that quote, as it really applies to my life...all of ours, really. |

There are also a plethora of amusing lines from the books that make me chuckle every time I read them: 'You’ll live to regret it, young fellow! Why didn’t you go too? You don’t belong here; you’re no Baggins — you — you’re a Brandybuck!' 'Did you hear that, Merry? That was an insult, if you like,' said Frodo as he shut the door on her. 'It was a compliment,' said Merry Brandybuck, 'and so, of course, not true.' |

Many have already said the first part of this quote; "Faithless is he who turns when the road darkens" "Do not vow to walk in the dark, who has not seen the nightfall." |
