Ok first off I want to say that please dont misunder stand this post. I love the LOTR movies. Ok so onto the real stuff

Ok. So I want to know your views on this

Ok, so before the LOTR movies, LOTR was thought of mostly by the book. Now, when some one says LOTR every one thinks of the movies. Do you think this is a shame to the books/tolkien in any way. Do you think he would be happy with the movies? If so do you think he would be proud that his boooks are remembered thru this movie?

I don't know what to say...

The books are a bit old-fashioned and all but the movies don't have all the things the books have. I'm in a 50-50 dead lock.

Hm, I would have never called the books old-fashioned...

I'd say that there is a slightly bigger emphasis on the female characters in the films, which is nice. Also, the plot moves slightly faster - it doesn't really drag at all. And when you see something visually, it tends to be more powerful. (I'm sure there are a few more in this category...)

But, apart from that, the films are not the books. They lack the same depth, not all of the characters are portrayed in the way Tolkien created them... it's a hard one, but I'd have to say that as much as I love the films to death, I think the books are better...

I definately think the book is better. I love the films too, but when I think of the LotR, it's the book, then the film. Film is a different art form, so they had to change some things from the book to make sense. You can't just go on and bash everything the film does because if it followed the book completely, then it would be crazy!

One good thing about the films is that it makes an amazing story accessible to one who would not read a 1,000 page fantasy/history novel for pleasure. The unfortunate thing, though, is that the film gets all the credit for being 'the real thing', and the book gets sort of lost in all the commotion and is enjoyed by only those who take the time to read it. The film is a good interpretation of the book, but not the real thing itself. But the film is also a way to get people insterested in the book. I'm sure there are a lot of people who read the book because they saw the film. So it can go both ways.

I don't know if Tolkien would have approved of the films or not. He probably would not have liked all the 'hollywood hype' that the movie has experienced. I do not believe Tolkien was that kind of person. I'm sure he may have had mixed feelings about it, no matter how impressive the movies are.

I think I've come up with an answer to this paradox. The reason why so many of us younger generation 'Tolkienists' are drawn to the movies, is because 1. We were grown up on movies(or rather they were more prevalent in society) and 2. Movies are a newer form of media, add computer effects and dramatic music, and you have one piece of moving work that takes written and spoken word to a next level. The visualization is done already, we are focused on the the story now.

Now I'm not saying I go for the movies vs. the books, nay I love them both equally! However, we're born into the current 'fads', therefore it's only natural that we go with the flow, and understand that type of media more than previous forms (oral tradition and books; which I'm sure most of use, if not all, enjoy in some point of our lives). Peter jackson did a great job, however, I'd have liked it if he leaned a little more towards the books. Great job though!

I saw the movies as another way to enjoy the books, although in some points the changes they made were unacceptable for me.
I think some of the main points are not explained in the movies. When my brother watched it with me, I had to explain where the Elves were going, and why they have to go and such things and I think that may have left the people who saw the movies without reading the books feeling a bit confused and thinking that it was a fault in the story.
I vote for the books, but I enjoyed the movies very much too, and I think it's good that they made them.

I saw the movies first, which led me to reading the books. I thank the movies for that, and I have no reason to complain as such.

I read the books first, and so I was able to form in my head an image of each character; of how they looked and acted. I loved their indivisual life stories and the depth Tolkien put into them. To me when I read the books the characters would come alive, when I saw what they were saying on the page I heard there voices as I thought they would sound, when they moved I saw them move the way I thought they would.

The movies were splendid, they didn't have the depth that the book had, but I thought they were well made. The sad thing is that all those people out there who saw the movie before reading the book will have an image of that actor in there head instead of an image they created themselves.

I think Tolkien would have been proud of the movies anyway. :)

The books without any doubts are much better in my opinion. Movies are for those lazy to read :P (j/k...dont take me serious)

My scale would be something like

80% - Books / 20% - Movies

I was quite lucky as when I was reading the books(I was eleven) the films were released. They helped me undesrtand the books better and helped me get through the Two Towers(which I struggled through).

Ever since I have read the books at least twice a year and I prefer teh books but i still love the film!
