I read the Silmarillion shortly after LotR and I must admit I love it very very much - but not as much as LotR. It´s hard to say why... I miss somehow the showing of small people, who are afraid of this enormous war and who find the courage to fight - just as the hobbits. In the Sil, there are only heroes mentioned - strong warriors, who are never afraid - nobody I can really relate to. So what do you think? |

I don't think I'd ever be able to decide which is better! LotR is such a beautiful story, with so many soulful characters! It has so many morals, and wisdom hidden within it too. The Silmarillion goes deeper into the history, and shows yu all the poeple and cultures of Middle-earth. There are many stories within stories, some happy, and some sad. I love 'em both! ![]() |

I like both! The Lord of The Rings just blew me away with its rich descriptions of middle earth, and the courage of Frodo! The Simarillion also just astounded me with its varied stories, it gave me a better understanding about Middle-Earth and its dwellers. I hope that makes sense ![]() ~Námarië, Tenn'enquetielva! I think I am the first to vote for the Silm... I really like it better, because I find that the stories in it with much greater depth and sadness than those of LotR. And Silm writes so much about elves! There is so little said about them in LotR. |

And I believe I am the second to vote for the LotR! I don't know what it is exactly. I thought I was mad in liking the Silmarillion more than the LotR. To me, it's simplistic, as it is told like a prochecy(much like John's account of the End[Book of Revelation]). To me, the LotR is good ol 'Swords and Sorcery' fantasy, despite it's dubbed-due to the facts-'High Fantasy', which I dub the Silmarillion. Otherwise, I'd have to call it summat else, and perhaps I could call it a 'biblical' work, as it is comprised(in the fashion that we know it) of several tales.(The Ainulindale and Valaquenta can be equated to Genesis, of course with Paganistic qualities). Anyway, I love the Silmarillion. (P.S. After reading the Book of Lost Tales, I thought Tolkien mad for a while, for not going ahead with it!) |

I vote for the Silmarillion. I love the stories, I love the people... Of course I think The Lord of the Rings is also very good, but the Sil's better to me. Dunno why. |

I voted for the Lord of the Rings, though I love both that and the Silmarillion. I read The Lord of the Rings first, so it's always been my favourite. |

I simply cannot choose between these two. They're just so different. The Silmarillion is, as most people say, a bit like the bible. It contains very much background story, it's not one consistent clear story, unlike the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I believe them to be equally good, but in their own ways. |

I gotta say that IMO The Silmarillion was better. I liked the LotR trilogy but, I find the history with the elves much more compelling and... more interesting. No doubt that LotR was a good read, I just prefer the history of the whole thing. I'm weird like that. |

That's a good point, Elu ( can I call you that?) They're both good, but in their own unique ways. IMO, The Lord of the Rings couldn't exist without The Silmarillion. But that's true anyway. |

It is most definately Silmarillion! I rather all the rich lore and stories of Battle, and of how the Arda came to be! There is nothing better than learning of more than one huge account or story. It's way better! |
