What i find most Fustrating about LOTR is that very little of Legolas is known.In the Calender at the back of the LOTR books,Legolas is only mentioned ONCE and right at the end about when he sailed across the sea with Gimli..
I myself have done ALOT of web search about Legolas and although i have quite a fair number of them..they all still tell me the same thing..
what happened before Legolas joined the fellowship?
why is he not known as Prince of Mirkwood or Heir of Thranduil?
Is he a younger child with other elder Siblings hence him not being the heir of thranduil??

and boy,
doesnt my list of questions go on...

Legolas just isn't a major character in the books--he's a big one, but not a major one. They really center on Sam, Frodo, Aragorn, Pippin, and surprisingly enough, on Eowyn.

But while he might not be the "Heir" of Thranduil, the title "Legolas Thranduilon" means "Legolas, son of Thranduil," so he still is credited with being the son of Thranduil.

To me, Legolas is just another elf in the books. He doesn't have a whole lot of personality (but more than he does in the movies)

I suppose Tolkien didn't find Legolas all that important. You don't get a whole lot of information about Gimli or Boromir either, although they too are members of the Fellowship. All you get to know about Gimli is really is decendence line, isn't it?
There are a lot about elves in general in the books, maybe he didn't feel like he needed to focus so much on Legolas...

Yes, I really don't think Tolkien felt the need to focus on Legolas. Notice that he normally focuses on the Noldor, or the High Elves in general, rather than the others. Legolas is not a High Elf, he is a Wood Elf.

That said, I do wish that there was more on Legolas, because there are things I wonder. But as Silme said, you don't get much on Gimli either. You have more on Boromir though; when he was born, his mother, when his mother died, etc. etc. But Tolkien really just chose not to focus on Legolas.

And here's another thought: I was just saying on another thread how Tolkien wrote LotR as though it was written by the Hobbits, using only information they had/could have found. I'm assuming most of their information on Elves came from Rivendell. Thus there wouldn't be much on Legolas, who is from Mirkwood.

Still, woudn't the elves in Rivendell know stuff about those in Mirkwood? I mean, Elrond was... a smart dude. And not particularly egoistic (except for the Arwen-going-to-the-Undying-Lands-matter). If he knew stuff about them, he'd have it written down, wouldn't he?
